Tennis affordable, easy game to learn

Basic training

By Shauna Scott Rhone
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Fred Steinbeck, 45, of Anderson Township doesn't compare himself to Andy Roddick, but he says he does a smashing job on area tennis courts. From his childhood, driving his parents crazy by returning serves on the garage door to today challenging his teenage daughters, Lindsey and Sara, to matches, Steinbeck loves to go lobbing.

What is it? Tennis

How did you get started? As a kid, hitting on neighborhood courts or against the garage doors.

What do you get out of it? It's fun, a form of friendly competition, camaraderie, exercise and stress relief.

What equipment do you need? Racquet, tennis balls and shoes.

How much does it cost? A good racquet is $80-$150. Tennis balls range from $2.50 for a tube of 3-4 to $50 or more for a case of 72. Shoes cost as little as $35 or as much as $100.

How long does it take to get started? Just have the interest. You can also take lessons. It took me a few weeks practicing and learning how to keep score.

Where do you play tennis? At many outdoor courts around town or indoor clubs. In the summer, I play at Lunken Airport's Playfield Courts.
