New dean begins at Raymond Walters

RAYMOND WALTERS -Dolores Straker begins her tenure this fall as the dean of the University of Cincinnati's Raymond Walters College after five years as university associate dean for academic affairs at the City University of New York.

There, she implemented programs that provide more than 20,000 students with academic support services and pre-college experiences. Her resume includes positions as a teacher and administrator, a lecturer and project coordinator.

Raymond Walters College, on Plainfield Road in Blue Ash, offers more than 60 degree and certificate programs to 4,000 students.

Plant diversity expert to present lecture

NORTHERN KENTUCKY U. - Michael Maunder, a specialist in threatened plant management, will give a lecture, "Islands of the Living Dead: The Race to Save Island Planet Diversity" at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 25 in Northern Kentucky University's Otto Budig Theater.

The Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden's Center for Conservation and Research of Endangered Wildlife (CREW) is hosting the event in collaboration with NKU's biology department.

Maunder is acting director of Fairchild Tropical Garden in Miami. The lecture is free to zoo staff, CREW members, and NKU faculty, staff and students.

Former P&G exec to speak at Xavier

XAVIER - Denis Beausejour, Answers for Life president and former vice president of global marketing at Procter & Gamble, will speak at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Cintas Center on Xavier University's campus in Evanston.

His talk kicks off the business profession program this fall in Xavier's Williams College of Business. The talk, "The Forgotten Essential of Leadership - the Leader's Character," is free to the public. Beausejour will address the importance of having character as a business professional.

UC volunteers plan day of service

U. OF CINCINNATI - Volunteers from the University of Cincinnati will hammer, scrub and paint Sept. 27 as part of "Into the Streets," a community service initiative during the school's Welcome Week for new students.

Students, faculty and staff will check in at 9 a.m. in the atrium and room 114 of the College of Law and then be taken across the city to provide community service from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Organizers of this year's program expect hundreds of UC volunteers to participate in churches, schools and social service agencies.
