Kickoff

A look inside college football

HEISMAN WATCH

Rising

Chris Perry, RB, Michigan. The Wolverine racked up 133 yards and three touchdowns on the ground, plus a TD catch in a whitewashing of Notre Dame. Perry has 549 rushing yards this season and is the early trophy favorite.

Eli Manning, QB, Mississippi. Granted, it came against Louisiana-Monroe, but Manning was near perfect last week throwing for 352 yards, three TDs and no picks. He needs to put up big numbers next week against Texas Tech.

Falling

Philip Rivers, QB, North Carolina State. This has nothing to do with Rivers' performance and everything to do with the fact the Wolfpack have lost two games in a row. Rivers has 1,068 yards and 10 TDs but a costly four interceptions.

Roy Williams, WR, Texas. His team lost to Arkansas, partly because Williams failed to get into the end zone. He had 10 catches for 117 yards but needed to score.

Keep your eye on

Rod Rutherford, QB, Pittsburgh. Rutherford's pass-efficiency rating of 191.5 is impressive, as is his TD-INT ratio of 7-0.

MUST-SEE TV

Bowling Green at Ohio State, noon Saturday (Ch. 12, 7): The Falcons could make their program with a win in Ohio Stadium.

Tennessee at Florida, noon Saturday (Ch. 25): Check out Gators freshman RB DeShawn Wynn (Reading), who has 195 yards and five TDs over the last two games.

Michigan at Oregon, 3:30 p.m. Saturday (Ch. 9, 2): Oregon is averaging 40.3 ppg; Michigan 44.3. Both are 3-0.

Georgia at LSU, 3:30 p.m. Saturday (Ch. 12, 7): One team will become a legit national title contender.

Miami at Boston College, 7:45 p.m. Saturday (ESPN): Just not the same as when Doug Flutie outdueled Bernie Kosar.

NUMBERS GAME

1:09 Time in which Michigan State allowed Louisiana Tech to score two touchdowns for a 20-19 upset. "We didn't just shoot ourselves in the foot," MSU guard Paul Harker said. "We took a bazooka and blew the whole thing off."

TOP FIVE LIST

Tennessee and Florida renew their rivalry Saturday. Here are the top moments in that series.

 5. 1997. Runaway Heisman favorite Peyton Manning of Tennessee struggles to a 33-20 loss, his fourth in four years to Florida. Manning goes on to lose the Heisman to Michigan's Charles Woodson and leaves Tennessee having never beaten Florida.

 4. 2001. In a rare December game vs. Florida, young Tennessee quarterback Casey Clausen leads the Vols into the Swamp and emerges not only with a 34-32 win but with a uniform that didn't touch the ground all night.

 3. 1995. Florida coach Steve Spurrier embarrasses Tennessee in the Swamp to the tune of a 62-37 win.

 2. 1998. Manning's replacement, Tee Martin, beats Florida 20-17 in overtime in Knoxville, and UT goes on to win the national championship.

 1. 1996. Spurrier brings his Gators into Knoxville and runs up a 35-0 halftime score. Tennessee puts up 29 second-half points, but eventual national champ Florida holds on.
