Best bets: What's on TV tonight

What's new

Like Family, 8:30 p.m., Channels 64, 26. Likable Holly Robinson Peete (For Your Love) returns in this diverse sitcom about an African-American couple and their two kids who take in a troubled white teen named Keith (J Mack Slaughter) and his mother (Diane Farr). There's far too much bathroom humor in this show: adults and the 16-year-old daughter barge into the bathroom while Keith is in the tub, and husband Ed (Kevin Michael Richardson) goes into mourning when Keith breaks his prized toilet seat. Don't you hate it when bad shows happen to good people?

Luis, 8:30 p.m., Channels 19, 45. Luis Guzman (Traffic) stars as an opinionated Harlem doughnut shop owner and landlord who's never happy about anything - especially if it involves his ex-wife (Delhi Township native Diana-Maria Riva) or his daughter's boyfriend. "Of all the white guys in the world, you found the one with no money," he complains to Marly (Jaclyn DeSantis). Fox tries far too hard to punch up this stale as day-old doughnuts comedy with three silly sidekicks: the neighborhood hustler, elderly tenant and jive-talking baker.

Season premieres

Wanda at Large, 8 p.m., Channels 19, 45. Wanda asks her ex-husband (Dave Chappelle) to help her get a TV interview with a star athlete in legal trouble.

Boston Public, 9 p.m., Channels 19, 45. The fourth season opens with a full agenda: A student's rape; a power struggle between the principal and his assistant; a challenge to the school's zero-tolerance drug policy; and the arrival of an idealistic young physics teacher. It's good stuff as usual, but will anyone show up for this classy show on Friday night after three years on Mondays?

Other shows worth watching

First in Flight, 8-10 p.m., Discovery. Engineers try to build - and fly - a full-size model of the Wright Brothers' 1903 airplane.

Dateline NBC, 9 p.m. Channels 5, 22. Una James, mother of Washington D.C. sniper suspect Lee Malvo, grants an exclusive interview to Stone Phillips.

JAG, 9 p.m. Channels 12, 7. In a repeat of May's cliffhanger, Harm (David James Elliott) resigns his commission to search for Mac (Catherine Bell) in Paraguay, setting up next week's season premiere.

CMT Inside Fame, 9 p.m., Country Music Television. Sheryl Crow talks about her transition from school teacher and jingle singer to winning eight Grammys.

All About the Andersons, 9:30 p.m., Channels 64, 26. Before going on a date, Anthony (Anthony Anderson) must explain to his son, 8, that his mother won't be coming back.

20/20, 10 p.m., Channels 9, 2. As if she doesn't get enough TV time already, Kelly Ripa chats with Barbara Walters to promote her new ABC sitcom and daytime talk show.

K Street, 10:30 p.m., HBO. Catch a repeat of the pilot for George Clooney's slick new fact-meets-fiction Capitol Hill series in which James Carville (as himself) and some fictional characters prep presidential candidate Howard Dean (as himself) for a debate.
