Private Horde wins Marfa at Turfway

The Enquirer and wire reports

Private Horde got a tap from rider Terry Thompson at the three-eighths pole and went on to win the $75,000 Marfa Stakes by a length.

Thompson, who had three previous starts on Private Horde over the last couple of years, replaced regular rider Jason Lumpkins for the race while the latter serves a suspension for a riding infraction. Trainer Joe Cain said Lumpkins will regain the mount for Private Horde's next race.

That race is likely the Breeders' Cup Sprint on Oct. 25 at Santa Anita.

"We're still going to the Breeders' Cup," Cain said. "We're happy. We got just the race we wanted today. They ran at him enough to make him work. If he's still good in the next couple of days, we're going."

SUPER DERBY: Ten Most Wanted won the Grade II $500,000 race for 3-year-olds at Louisiana Downs by a half length over Soto.

KEENELAND SALE: During the 12-day event, the Lexington track sold 2,969 horses for $274,125,300. The gross sales total was second only to the $291,827,100 for 3,313 horses in 2000. Gross sales increased 30 percent from $210,809,000 last year.

The average price of $92,329 set a record, up from $71,850 last year, and more than the previous record, $88,085 set in 2000. The median price was $34,000, a 13.3 percent jump from last year's $30,000 record.

Auctioneers sold 27 horses for $1 million or more, compared to only 15 last year. A Gone West filly brought the top price of the sale - $3.8 million.
