Out of Appalachia: One of the top picks for the 20-day arts festival today is an Appalachian Women's Read-Around with stories and poems by Appalachian and Southern women, 7-9 p.m. tonight at the Pendleton Heritage Center, 2760 Eastern Ave., East End. $3. 272-1171. The festival runs through Oct. 12.

Planning ahead

24 hours out: Get an inside look at the Bats Incredible! public art project during a special walking tour with representatives from ArtWorks (the organization that put the project together), a real Bats Incredible! artist and several enthusiasts, 11 a.m.-noon Saturday beginning at Fountain Square concluding at Great American Ball Park. $5 (reservation suggested). 367-5602.
