Good Things Happening

Readers win hockey tickets

There's no gimmick to this, just a new approach to get kids in grades 1 to 8 to read more.

It is a reading program sponsored by the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County with the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks.

There is an incentive. Anyone who reads five books or listens to five audiobooks between Wednesday, when the program starts, through Oct. 25 will receive free tickets to the Mighty Ducks game Nov. 8.

Jillian Subach, program coordinator, said the collaboration with the Ducks will help kids learn more about hockey, too.

To participate, pick up a reader's form starting Wednesday at the Main Public Library, 800 Vine St., downtown or any of the branches.

Bowling for math

Most bowlers today rely on computers to add up their scores.

For George Riley, a local Hall of Famer, that's a shame. Bowling can teach kids math skills. And more importantly, he says, the sport boosts family values.

Riley, a retired postal worker, chairs the Greater Cincinnati Bowling Association's In School Program Committee. He brings bowling pins into local elementary schools, giving kids tips.

"What we emphasize is the family concept," Riley said. The program has reached more than 77,000 kids. A recent tournament at Stone's Bowling Lanes brought out 450, he said.

Seniors get help

Watch out, it is time for the RASKALS to show up - and no one can be happier than senior citizens in the West Chester area. RASKALS means Random Acts of Simple Kindness Affecting Local Seniors.

Laura Groff, recreation assistant for the Parks & Recreation Department in West Chester, said twice a year RASKALS volunteers head to the homes of seniors to do chores.

This year's event will take place on Nov. 1.

OUR KIDS

Kevin Dickinson may know as much about bats as any Reds player.

At the insistence of his art teacher, Patricia Bruns, the Colerain High School sophomore applied for work with the Bats Incredible team.

Kevin went through the rigorous interview process and presented his artwork.

Not only did he become a member of the team, but he earned $700 and helped create "Bat-B-Q" and "Sights of the Stadium," pieces of artwork that have been displayed at Union Terminal Museum Center.

The artwork will be auctioned Nov. 1 at Music Hall.

The proceeds will go to ArtWorks and the Cincinnati Reds Community Fund.

"The people that I worked with were very diverse and helped me to interact with other people," Kevin said. "Getting paid to do what I love was fantastic."

He is the son of Donald and Joy Dickinson of Colerain Township.

SALUTE TO SOLDIERS

Nurse commissioned

Ann Elizabeth Houck has been commissioned a second lieutenant in the Army from the ROTC program at the University of Louisville, and was assigned to the Nurse Corps at Fort Lewis, Washington.

She graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor's degree in nursing from Bellarmine University, Louisville, Ky.

She was inducted into the Kappa Gamma Pi Scholastic Honor Society and received the Sigma Theta Tau Leadership Award.

The McNicholas High School graduate is the daughter of Peggy and Dave Robinson of Anderson Township.

Air Force promotion

Jason Herren has been promoted to the rank of staff sergeant in the Air Force. He is assigned to the 48th Logistics Readiness Squadron at RAF Lakenheath, England.

The Hamilton High School graduate is the son of Linda and William Herren of West Chester Township.
