Crafty Shaw repeats victory at Turfway

The Enquirer and wire reports

Crafty Shaw found the right track and right distance Saturday in winning the $100,000 Grade III Turfway Park Fall Championship for the second straight year.

"We won this race last year at a mile and an eighth," trainer Peter Vestal said. "I was glad to see they shortened it to a mile. He's run at a mile and a sixteenth, mile and an eighth, but he's better at a mile. We were confident coming in here."

Crafty Shaw, under Craig Perret, finished 2 1/4 lengths before Cat Tracker.

The victory marked Crafty Shaw's fifth at Turfway in six starts. He finished third in the Kentucky Cup Classic two weeks ago.

BELMONT PARK: Mineshaft, 4, cruised to another effortless victory, this time taking the $1 million Jockey Club Gold Cup. The colt has three straight Grade I wins and may have Horse of the Year honors wrapped up before the Oct. 25 Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita.

KENTUCKY FUTURITY: Mr. Muscleman beat Power to Charm by 6 lengths to win the $526,000 final part of trotting's Triple Crown at Lexington's Red Mile. Incredible Hulk was third and Hambletonian winner Amigo Hall fourth in the field of nine.

The victory gave driver Ron Pierce back-to-back wins in the Kentucky Futurity; he won the race last year with Like a Prayer.
