LA GRANGE - The driver of a tanker truck who was killed when the truck swerved off the road and turned over was identified as Robert S. Tuohey, police said.
The truck was traveling south Tuesday on Interstate 71 about two miles south of La Grange when it swerved into the median and overturned, Detective Kevin Nuss of the Oldham County Police Department said.
Nuss said Tuohey, 67, of Erlanger, died immediately.
The crash occurred at 9:30 a.m. shutting down both southbound lanes of the interstate for about 10 miles. The truck was hauling 3,500 gallons of a dilute lye solution, Nuss said.
Nuss said the truck did not spill its contents, which were later transferred to another tanker truck by authorities. The interstate was closed for about 11 hours to clean up the wreckage, police said.
Nuss said the hazardous material was not flammable but could have caused burning of the skin or respiratory problems.
