Regional Report

Power outage shuts down Dayton airport

Compiled from staff and wire reports

DAYTON - A power outage shut down flights at Dayton International Airport for about three hours Sunday, and a separate outage affected about 14,400 other Dayton Power and Light Co. customers.

The outages were not connected, said DPL spokesman Bryce Nickel. The airport outage was caused by a failure in an underground cable, while the other in north Dayton was caused by downed power lines, he said.

Power went out at the airport and the facilities on the road leading to the main terminal about 7:20 a.m., said airport spokeswoman Sharon Sears.

"We did have one flight come in during that time, but most flights were delayed because we could not screen anyone through the security checkpoint," she said.

Two-car crash closes part of I-75

A section of northbound Interstate 75 just south of Galbraith Road was temporarily closed Sunday night after a two-car crash.

Cincinnati police officers responded just before 10 p.m. One person was killed, according to unconfirmed reports.

Mailing overseas gifts? Time nears

Christmas isn't that far away for people thinking of sending holiday cards or gifts overseas.

The U.S. Postal Service has set recommended mailing dates for holiday mail sent overseas to military troops or other international locations.

If you want your Christmas cards or packages to arrive to military troops by Dec. 25, send them via first-class mail or priority mail by Dec. 11.

The deadline for lower-cost parcel post is Nov. 13.

Deadlines for other international mail varies. For Europe, send global economy mail by Nov. 7, global airmail parcel post by Dec. 12, and global airmail letters and cards by Dec. 15.

For other international destinations, visit your local post office or www.usps.com and click on postal news releases.

Items for delivery by Hanukkah should be mailed five days before those dates.

Westwood vehicle fire spreads to house

WESTWOOD - A vehicle fire Saturday evening caused about $30,000 in damage when it spread to a house.

Shortly before 6 p.m. the Cincinnati fire department responded to a call of a vehicle on fire outside 3119 Wooster Place in Westwood.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the vehicle fire, but the flames already had spread to the two-story wood frame house and had climbed to the attic, said District Two chief Gary Scott.

No one was injured. Two adults and two children living in the home were displaced and assisted by the American Red Cross.
