Stephen Blackwell, Jr.'s regimen puts a new spin on aerobics. The 35-year-old Northside resident turned to exercising in the pool after a leg injury. Now he's inviting everyone to jump in for his souped-up water calisthenics.
Blackwell is currently the underwater drill instructor of Melrose YMCA's Aqua Boot Camp. His workout gives a new meaning to Basic Training.
What is it?
Aqua Boot Camp is a high-intensity, non-weight bearing exercise that combines cardiovascular, strength, abdominal, yoga and aerobic training. Aqua Boot Camp also includes homework and "land" fitness tips.
How did you get started?
I started taking aqua fitness classes as a part of my rehabilitation for an injury. The instructor saw my motivation with others and asked me if I was interested in teaching a class, because the instructor was leaving. I said yes and here I am, seven years later.
What do you get out of it?
Aqua fitness included with my strength-training routine gives me an added edge of increased flexibility and agility. I've included the aqua routine as a complete part of my aerobic workout. I love teaching and get hyped by the members in the class looking for a workout.
How much does it cost to get started?
$35 for an eight-week session.
What type of equipment do you need?
A bathing suit, surf socks or aqua fitness shoes (for foot stability and to prevent blistering) and an hour for yourself.
How long does it take to get started?
You can get started now. Don't continue to delay, or put off improving your overall well being.
How long did it take to learn?
It will take about two weeks or four classes to get the hang of the intensity of the exercises we do.
