By Shauna Scott Rhone
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Do it

Runs help children: How about a home run where everybody wins? Sign up for the 5 Mile Home Run, which starts at 9 a.m. Saturday from the Children's Home of Northern Kentucky in Covington. Proceeds from the race, a 5-mile run or 2.3-mile walk through Devou Park and Park Hills, benefit the home, which provides community services for at-risk families and children. Race-day registration begins at 7:30 a.m. An added treat is at the conclusion of the race, participants finish at the park in front of a panoramic view of the ongoing Tall Stacks celebration. $20 walk, $25 run. (859) 261-8768; www.sprunning.com or www.chnk.org.

• Five-year-old Andrew Jump is waiting for a cure for MPS, a progressive genetic disease involving the absence of enzymes that help the body eliminate dead cells. His friends and family in Sparta hope the proceeds from Andrew Jump's For A Cure 5K race will continue research for a cure for Andrew and others struggling with the disease. The race begins at 8 a.m. Saturday at Boone County High School in Florence. $25. The event also includes a walk/fun run. (859) 643-1253 or hometown.aol.com/paulinajump/myhomepage/family.html.

• Join the friends of the Marva Collins Preparatory School for their Feet in the Street 2.5 mile fitness run and walk at 9 a.m. Saturday at the school in Silverton. Registration starts at 7:45 a.m. Proceeds benefit the pre-K through eighth grade elementary school. $15. 761-6609.

Lift a leg for fitness: Entries must be postmarked by Friday for the Fire Hydrant 5000 5K Run and Fitness Walk at 10 a.m. Oct. 25 at the Warren County Humane Association Animal Shelter in Lebanon. Of course, latecomers can register at 8:30 a.m. the day of the race, but you might miss out on the swell long sleeved T-shirts or sweatshirts for the participants. Also a short fun run for kids with ribbons given to all the junior runners. $10; $23 includes T-shirt; $30 includes sweatshirt. Race day: $13, $28 includes T-shirt (while they last). 474-1399 or www.racedmc.com.

Hot stepping: Saturday's the deadline to run like heck to register for the 12th annual Run Like Hell 5K Run/Walk and Halloween Party at 7 p.m. Oct. 24 at the corner of Dana and Woodburn avenues in Evanston. Take a "hair-raising run" through Walnut Hills Cemetery, stay for the party and bring a partner for the two-a-team Crypt Keeper Cornhole Tournament. Run: $25 online, $30 mail-in; party only: $10 online, $15 mail-in; cornhole: $20 per team. 533-9300, Ext. 15 or www.racedmc.com.
