Best bets: What to watch tonight

Gannett News Service

Must-see

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, 10 p.m., Channels 5, 22. In the revolving door of Law & Order shows, many actors are dismissed with a shrug. Not tonight; Stephanie March's final episode hits powerfully.

The story begins with what seems to be the murder of a prostitute. That soon links to overlapping investigations of a drug lord.

Things are so tangled that the case might not hold up. Assistant District Attorney Alexandra Cabot (March) fights to keep it alive.

Stick with this - even through the dry, droll parts. Coming up are some moments with powerhouse impact.

Secret Lives: Hidden Children and Their Rescuers During World War II, 7 p.m., Cinemax.

Amid the horrors of the Holocaust, the Nazis said anyone hiding a Jew would be killed.

Still, people did it. Some Jewish children disguised as family members; some hid in closets whenever strangers came.

One of those kids, Aviva Slesin, grew up to direct this film, interviewing many of the rescuers and the rescued. It's a story rich in both heroes and heartbreak.

Other shows worth watching

8 Simple Rules, 8 p.m., Channels 9, 2. This series has finished the episodes that starred the late John Ritter. Before starting new ones it will rerun some earlier episodes. Here's the pilot, an above-average half-hour about a guy dealing with a daughter who exudes sexuality.

Whoopi, 8 p.m., Channels 5, 22. Here's a mismatch: Mavis - outspoken and heavy-smoking - is suddenly mixing with President Bush and his staff.

Happy Family, 8:30 p.m., Channels 5, 22. Sara decides it's time to be wild. That creates quick complications, of course.

Frasier, 9 p.m., Channels 5, 22. After previous misadventures, Frasier swears he'll take a break from dating. He soon feels uncomfortable around happy couples so Roz sets him up with a practice date.

Strategic Humor Initiative, 9 p.m., Channel 48. Yes, humor on PBS. Here's an attempt to blend topical humor from British, Canadian and American comics. It's led by David Frost.

Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica, 10:30 p.m., MTV. It's a night on the town as the newlyweds go out with friends and family to celebrate Jessica's birthday. Nick drags Jessica to Home Depot to find something to combat the swarm of honeybees that has invaded their yard.
