Here's a big 'Prost' to pigs of ages past
What were they transporting on all those tall-stacked riverboats in the 19th century? Among other things, pork. It was the product that gave Cincinnati its satirical title Porkopolis.
So it might be fitting during Tall Stacks to stop in at Hofbrauhaus in Newport and dig into a Munchener Schweinshaxe. It's a roasted bone-in shank with crispy skin and tender meat. It's served with sauerkraut, vegetables, potato and bread dumplings. There are plenty of other pork choices on Hofbrauhaus' menu, in the form of schnitzels, sausages and smoked pork chops.
There's entertainment at Hofbrauhaus, too. Their Hausa band performs at lunch and the early part of dinner. The band Prost plays Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights. It's easy to get between Hofbrauhaus and the Ohio-side stages by the Purple People bridge. If you eat there at lunch and have a Tall Stacks admission pin, you can get a 15% discount from now until Nov. 30. Hofbrauhaus is at 3rd and Saratoga, (859) 491-7200.
Speaking of discounts, Johnny Rockets is offering 10 percent off its entire bill for anything on the menu when you present your official Tall Stacks admission pin anytime through Sunday.
Johnny Rockets are in Newport on the Levee and Sycamore Plaza in Kenwood.
