Mount St. Joseph blanks Defiance

Enquirer staff, wire reports

Andy Wellendorf (Elder) scored on a 6-yard pass from Mike Dane (Little Miami), and Jeff Williams returned an interception 55 yards for a touchdown as Mount St. Joseph beat Defiance 17-0 Saturday.

Mount St. Joseph was outgained in first downs and in rushing, passing and total yards.

Dane was 17-of-28 passing for 197 yards for Mount St. Joseph (5-1, 3-0 Heartland Conference.)

Corey Minnfield was 23-of-43 for 237 yards for Defiance (1-6, 0-3) but was intercepted three times. Jason Gendron rushed 25 times for 68 yards.

Defiance had 17 first downs to 10 for MSJ, and a 353-262 edge in total yards. The Yellowjackets held the ball 2 1/2 minutes longer than MSJ but also were penalized 13 times for 141 yards.

Malone 14, Thomas More 6

CANTON, Ohio - Sean Knight rushed for 107 yards and a touchdown and Mike Swanson returned an interception 41 yards for a score for Malone.

Swanson's interception came on the opening possession, and Knight scored on an 18-yard run about three minutes later to give the Pioneers (2-4) a 14-0 lead. Malone held Thomas More (2-4) to 125 yards passing and only 41 yards rushing on 43 carries.

The Saints' Nate Berkley (Bellevue) completed four of 14 passes for 58 yards with three interceptions, and Seth Ellis (Batavia) was 3-of-14 for 67 yards and an interception. Both QBs were sacked five times.

Dayton 27, Tiffin 23

DAYTON, Ohio - Cliff Sachini carried 30 times for 108 yards to anchor Dayton's ball-control offense. The Flyers (7-1) ran 68 rushing plays, twice as many as Tiffin (2-5), and had a 12 1/2-minute edge in time of possession.

Baldwin-Wallace 51, Wilmington 0

BEREA, Ohio - Dan Larlham ran for 110 yards and a touchdown on four carries and threw two scoring passes to lead B-W (5-1, 4-1 Ohio Conference) past winless Wilmington (0-6, 0-5).
