WOOSTER, Ohio - The College of Wooster has received its largest donation to date - a $9 million gift from the family that runs retail giant Wal-Mart.
Wal-Mart chairman Rob Walton attended the small liberal arts college for two years in the early 1960s, before transferring and graduating from the University of Arkansas. Walton also served as a trustee at Wooster from 1986 to 2001.
"We feel very, very fortunate to be the object of their giving," said R. Stanton Hales, president of the 1,800-student college. "We know that they already have these strong commitments to lots of charities."
The gift is from the Walton Family Foundation Inc., which concentrates much of its philanthropy in Arkansas, where Wal-Mart is based.
