IRL driver Renna dies in crash at Indianapolis

Digest

The Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS - IRL racer Tony Renna died Wednesday after crashing at close to 220 mph during a test drive at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Renna, 26, of Deland, Fla., crashed into the outside wall while exiting the track's third turn.

He was pronounced dead on arrival at Methodist Hospital, speedway spokesman Ron Green said, adding that the cause of the accident was not immediately known. Renna is the 67th person fatally injured at the track since it opened in 1909.

"Tony Renna was a rising star in IndyCar Series racing. All of us involved in racing feel a great loss," speedway president Tony George said.

Team owner Chip Ganassi said he was told Renna was on his fourth lap of the day and had reached speeds of 218 mph when the car crashed.

Renna finished seventh in the Indianapolis 500 in May and joined the elite Ganassi Racing team this month.

Hockey

RANGERS: Eric Lindros spoke softly after practice, a session he couldn't participate in because of a chest sprain that knocked him out of the New York Rangers' game Monday and will sideline him two to four weeks.

"It's much better than yesterday," Lindros said. "If things keep improving, I don't foresee any problems getting back as quickly as possible."

WEDNESDAY IN THE NHL:

•  Maple Leafs 3, Stars 1: Joe Nieuwendyk's tiebreaking, power-play goal with 6:58 remaining and Ed Belfour's 15 saves lifted Toronto.

•  Panthers 2, Devils 1: Jay Bouwmeester and Olli Jokinen scored 42 seconds apart late in the third period and Roberto Luongo made 32 saves to lead Florida.

• Red Wings 4, Blue Jackets 1: Brett Hull scored his 717th career goal and moved into a fourth-place tie on the NHL career goals list in Detroit's victory.

Tennis

Seven years before he triumphed at the 2003 Western & Southern Financial Group Masters and the U.S. Open, Andy Roddick won the Wilson Junior Championships at Five Seasons Northern Kentucky.

Success stories like his could bring out fans this weekend for that 14-and-under tournament at Five Seasons, and for the corresponding girls 14s event - the Gamma Junior Championships - at Five Seasons Cincinnati.

These national invitationals are Level III events, two tiers below the national championships. Each event has a 64-player draw. Play begins at 8 a.m. Friday; the finals will begin noon Sunday.

The top seed in the boys event is Drew Daniel of Shawnee Mission, Kan., ranked No. 26 nationally. Matt Allare of Maineville, the third seed, is the highest-ranked local at No. 30.

The top seed in the girls draw is 25th-ranked Dana Larsen of Whitefish Bay, Wisc. The top local girl competing is unseeded Connie Hsu, ranked No. 233.

SWISS INDOORS: Top-seeded Andy Roddick overcame local qualifier Jean-Claude Scherrer 6-3, 7-6 (4) in the first round at Basel, Switzerland.

ANTI-DOPING PLAN: USA Track & Field proposed a new anti-doping plan that could include possible lifetime bans and fines up to $100,000 for steroid offenses.

The "zero-tolerance" plan was unveiled amid a potential scandal involving athletes using a previously undetectable steroid, and just days after the U.S. Olympic Committee gave USATF a month to deal with the issue.

USATF chief executive officer Craig Masback confirmed four U.S. athletes, whom he did not name, tested positive this summer for the new designer steroid tetrahydrogestrinone, or THG.
