MONROE TWP. - Ohio's bicentennial has sent a wave of historical inspiration through this rural Clermont County community.

"Would you believe we have printed the first history on this historic township since 1888?" asked resident Libbie Bennett, chairwoman of the township's bicentennial board.

"So we are celebrating, of course."

On Nov. 9, the Monroe Township Trustees will dedicate two Ohio historical markers.

At 1:30 p.m., the first will be at the bottom of Laurel Hill, where Ohio 232 crosses Colclazer Run.

This marker will commemorate the birthplace of Adjutant Gen. Henry Clark Corbin and also honor Monroe Township's first pioneer, David Colclazer, a veteran of the Revolutionary War.

He settled here about 1796.

"The township has such a rich history and proud heritage," Trustee Dave Kunz said. "We're honored to commemorate these two men with beautiful bronze plaques."

At 2 p.m., a short program will be held at Mount Zion Church on Clermontville-Laurel Hill.

The second marker will be dedicated there at 2:30 p.m.

It will explain the history of the church, built in 1872, as well as Revolutionary soldier Hugh Mulloy and Lafayette School, built in 1869.

"We invite everyone to join us as we celebrate these historic places that still survive in 2003," Bennett said.
