Disney win vaults Singh past Woods on money list
The Enquirer and wire reports
Vijay Singh took all the drama from the Funai Classic at Disney in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., winning with ease Sunday to surge past Tiger Woods on the money list.
Singh broke from a four-way tie and never let anyone get within two shots on the back nine. He finished with another long birdie putt for a 5-under 67 to win by four strokes over Woods, Stewart Cink and Scott Verplank.
He won $720,000 for his fourth victory of the year, which left him poised to end Woods' four-year reign of the PGA Tour money title.
Singh, who finished at 23-under 265, has a $250,095 lead over Woods and a huge advantage by playing next week in the $4.8 million Chrysler Championship in Tampa. Woods is skipping it.
TOM'S TERRIFIC: Jim Thorpe won the crystal. Tom Watson captured the Cup - and then he gave away his $1 million prize to charity.
Thorpe held off Watson for a three-stroke victory in the Charles Schwab Cup Championship in Somona, Calif., with a final-round 68,
Thorpe finished 20 under for his seventh career title and biggest payday in the Champions Tour season-ending tournament.
Though Watson couldn't knock Thorpe from his wire-to-wire tournament lead, he held off Thorpe to win the tour money title by less than $23,000. Watson also wrapped up an easy victory in the Schwab Cup - awarded to the top scorer in a season-long points competition.
Watson announced he was donating the resulting $1 million annuity to organizations fighting amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
Bruce Edwards, Watson's caddie for 30 years, was diagnosed this year with ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease.
PAK TIES FOR 10TH: Se Ri Pak finished 10th in a Korean tour event after becoming the first woman to make the two-round cut in a men's tournament in 58 years. She finished 11 strokes behind the winner, Chang Ik-je.
NATIONWIDE TOUR: Craig Bowden shot an even-par 71 to win the Miccosukee Championship by a stroke and earn a spot in the season-ending tour Championship.
The top 55 earners advance to the tour championship. Then the top 20 finishers on the money list will earn 2004 PGA Tour cards.
MADRID OPEN: Ricardo Gonzalez closed with a 6-under 65 and rallied from six back for a one-stroke victory.
