Tagliabue defends instant replay, rips Billick
The Associated Press
CHICAGO - NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue lashed back at Baltimore Ravens coach Brian Billick Thursday for criticizing instant replay, saying his comments were "intolerable."
Tagliabue said he expects owners to keep video review as an officiating aid when it comes up for a vote at a meeting next March.
"My guess is replay will continue because they think, three-quarters or more of the clubs will think, it's an important tool in terms of officiating in the game," Tagliabue said.
The commissioner made his comments on the final day of the league's fall meeting, where team owners awarded the 2008 Super Bowl to Arizona.
After two challenged calls went against his team in a victory over Denver last Sunday, Billick had seen enough.
"I quit. I give up," Billick said. "I've tried to be an advocate for instant replay. I've tried to do the company line. I've said the right things.
"League, I'm sorry. Dump it."
"I think what Brian Billick said about replay was intolerable, unacceptable, uncalled for and he should be fined," Tagliabue said, adding he didn't know if that would happen.
Earlier Thursday, Arizona beat out Tampa and Washington, D.C. for the 2008 Super Bowl.
FALCONS: Coach Dan Reeves insisted he's not pressuring Michael Vick to get back on the field, while the ailing quarterback bumped up his scheduled return by a week.
Vick, recovering from a broken right leg, said Thursday he hopes to be playing by the Nov. 30 game at Houston - not Dec. 7 against Carolina, which he indicated a day earlier.
Reeves took issue Thursday with the media for the way his comments Wednesday were reported. He had said: "Mike needs to get back as soon as he possibly can" and "if he's going to be better, it's going to be getting in ballgames."
"Never once did I indicate anything that was written, so you definitely had a different slant on it than I did," Reeves told reporters.
BROWNS: Cleveland running back William Green could face prison time, fines and a suspension after being arrested on charges of drunken driving and marijuana possession.
Green was arrested Monday after police saw his car weaving on the street. An officer found a bag of marijuana weighing 3.2 grams in the car, and a breath test indicated Green had a blood-alcohol content of .165, more than twice the state's limit, police said.
49ERS: Quarterback Jeff Garcia won't play Sunday in San Francisco's game against St. Louis to rest his injured left ankle. Tim Rattay will make his first NFL start.
