Shaker site has local advocate
HARRISON - Richard Spence of Glendale wants the Hamilton County Park District to open the historic Whitewater Shaker Village to the public.
"It's a treasure," he said. "We should save it. We have a chance now."
He said the first encouraging step occurred recently when park district officials allowed the Friends of Whitewater Shaker Village to hold a Shaker exhibit at Miami Whitewater Forest. The event attracted a steady crowd.
A number of Shaker buildings still stand on land owned by the park district.
Information: Spence, 772-7974.
DOWNTOWN - Former Cincinnatian Ray "Hap" Halloran, of Menlo Park, Calif., will speak at the main Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County about surviving in a prisoner of war camp.
He has written a book, Hap's War: The Incredible Survival of a P.O.W. Slated for Execution.
The B-29 navigator was shot down at 32,000 feet over Tokyo in January 1945. Immediately he was hit with bricks. In a POW camp, he endured brutal beatings, starvation, torture and solitary confinement. He was displayed naked in an animal cage in a zoo.
He will speak at 10:45 a.m. Nov. 11 in the library's 49th annual Veterans Day Program.
Information: 369-6959.
MASON - This Warren County city will honor veterans with a brick and granite memorial to be dedicated at 2 p.m. Nov. 8 at the Mason Municipal Center, 6000 Mason-Montgomery Road.
At 10 a.m. Nov. 11 (Veterans Day), a parade will end at the memorial. A service will follow there.
HAMILTON - A free performance of the Hamilton-Fairfield Symphony Orchestra is set for 4 p.m. Nov. 23 at St. Julie Billiart Church, 224 Dayton St.
It is the annual Tillmann Memorial Concert.
