Kenyon Martin hurts left ankle
By The Associated Press
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - New Jersey forward Kenyon Martin sprained his left ankle the Nets' home opener against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday night.
X-rays were negative and Martin's status will be reevaluated on Saturday, team spokesman Gary Sussman said about 20 minutes after New Jersey's 84-61 victory.
Martin jumped high in an attempt to block a shot by Latrell Sprewell and his ankle bent awkwardly when he landed on Sprewell's foot with 10:05 left in the third quarter.
The emotional leader of the Nets immediately fell to the court and banged his fist on the floor several times.
Trainer Tim Walsh ran on the court to help Martin, but it was obvious Martin was in a lot of pain.
Martin was carried to the locker room by teammates Aaron Williams and Brian Scalabrine. Martin finished with 11 points.
The No. 1 pick in the 2000 draft, Martin had a team-high 26 points and 11 rebounds in the season-opening loss at Toronto on Wednesday night.
Martin, who averaged career highs of 16.7 points, 8.4 rebounds and 1.27 steals last season, is in the final year of his contract.
Johnson, Pacers keep Hawks winless

Johnson scored 15 points for the Pacers, who fell behind 14-0 at the start of the game but rebounded to keep the Hawks winless. Atlanta has lost three in a row to start the season, including two in overtime.
Ron Artest led the Pacers with 22 points and Al Harrington scored 20.
The Pacers' Reggie Miller didn't dress because of a sore lower back.
Johnson, who played parts of two seasons with the Hawks, burned his old team by hitting a 3-pointer out of the corner with 22.6 seconds left in overtime, breaking a 97-97 tie. He then took an elbow to the face from Terry, who was ejected, and hit the two ensuing free throws.
