Woods, Singh set to battle for PGA's top money spot

Digest

The Associated Press

HOUSTON - The Tour Championship at Champions Golf Club is shaping up to be the scene of a Texas-sized duel between Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh. At stake beginning today is the PGA Tour money title, which Woods has owned the last four years.

Singh is playing the best golf of his career and has a $768,494 lead over Woods on the money list, although he has played nine more tournaments. All he has to do at the Tour Championship to clinch the top spot is finish in a three-way tie for third.

Tennis

TENNIS MASTERS CUP: Top-ranked Andy Roddick and Andre Agassi were drawn into different round-robin groups Wednesday at Houston, so they can't meet before the semifinals.

Roddick, the U.S. Open champion, is trying to finish a year at No. 1 for the first time. French Open champion Juan Carlos Ferrero and Wimbledon winner Roger Federer can catch him, though, depending on how the three fare at the hard-court tournament.

Roddick will face Guillermo Coria, Rainer Schuettler and Carlos Moya in round-robin action.

Eight-time major champion Agassi, Ferrero, Federer and David Nalbandian were drawn into the other group.

Singles play begins Monday and ends Nov. 16.

High schools

Turpin's Carolyn Rauen was named the Ohio girls winner of the Wendy's High School Heisman, which recognizes athletes who are leaders on their teams and in their classrooms and communities. Rauen, who participates in cross country and track, is one of 102 students who will compete to become a finalist for the national award.

Hockey

WEDNESDAY'S GAMES: Jamie Langenbrunner scored with 42.7 seconds remaining in overtime Wednesday, giving the New Jersey Devils a 3-2 win over the San Jose Sharks.

Scott Stevens set up the first two New Jersey goals, by Christian Berglund and Turner Stevenson, to reach 900 career points. Martin Brodeur made 13 saves as the Devils extended their winning streak to four games.

• Thrashers 7, Sabres 4 - Patrik Stefan scored on a penalty shot, and Randy Robitaille and Ilya Kovalchuk each had a goal and two assists for Atlanta.

• Kings 3, Panthers 2 - Derek Armstrong and Trent Klatt scored power-play goals as Los Angeles won at Florida for the first time.

RED WINGS: Detroit signed 40-year-old free agent forward Steve Thomas to a one-year contract.

CINCINNATI MIGHTY DUCKS 4, GRAND RAPIDS 1: Joel Stepp scored twice to lead Cincinnati. Michael Holmqvist scored his team-high fourth goal to extend his point streak to seven games.
