Best bets: What's on TV tonight

Gannett News Service

Must-See

Tru Calling, 8 p.m., Channels 19, 45.

In last week's premiere we met Tru Davies (Eliza Dushku), a serious sort. She's a college grad who works in a morgue while hoping to get into med school.

We also learned that the dead sometimes talk to her, asking for help. She can then go back 12 hours and try to change things.

Yes, this is fantasy. We know that because tonight's hour has a Detroit Tiger pitching a two-hitter.

Still, it's solidly done. Dushku is terrific as Tru and the stories are more complex than they first seem.

Tonight, an off-duty firefighter and a little girl are killed in an apartment blaze. Tru goes back and prevents that - she thinks.

Meanwhile, hindsight lets her deal with a deceitful boyfriend and a gambling-addicted brother. So far, Tru Calling is fascinating.

Other shows worth watching

Friends, 8 and 8:30 p.m., Channels 5, 22. First is a new episode with Greg Kinnear as a noted scientist who could give Ross the grant he covets. The guy also is obsessed with winning back Charlie, who is his former (and Ross' current) girlfriend. Meanwhile, Joey has an odd audition tape and Phoebe has a creepy painting. That's followed by a rerun of the episode with Joey's fidgety audition impressing a director, played by Jeff Goldblum.

Will & Grace, 9 p.m., Channels 5, 22. Some people attract dates by walking their dogs; Will meets a hot guy (Dylan McDermott, formerly of The Practice) by pushing his mom in her wheelchair. Meanwhile, Karen's (Megan Mullally) latest revenge scheme leads to a surprising chap, played by John Cleese of Monty Python fame.

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, 9 p.m., Channels 12, 7. A man's head has been found in the woods near a small town.

Scrubs, 9:30 p.m., Channels 5,22. Tom Cavanagh of Ed returns to his guest role as J.D.'s brother. Tonight, he moves in and is then disturbed by J.D.'s cynical outlook.

ER, 10 p.m., Channels 5, 22. Kovac and Pratt argue the ethics of keeping a weak, premature baby alive. Meanwhile, Lewis continues to bond with a sarcastic architect (Bob Newhart in the second of three episodes) who is losing his sight.

Without a Trace, 10 p.m., Channels 12, 7. Jack suspects that the disappearance of one teen is connected with the rape of another.
