Williams keeps stride with big expectations
2-minutes drill with Texas wide receiver Roy Williams
Texas Longhorns receiver Roy Williams began the season as one of the top-rated receivers in the country. He hasn't disappointed. With 45 catches for 671 yards and seven touchdowns, he's putting up pro-caliber numbers and is a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award, which goes to the nation's top receiver. He took time out from practice this week to do the 2-minute drill with the Enquirer's Dustin Dow.
Q: How much are you looking forward to the NFL draft? Or is that more of a distraction during the season?
A: It's every kid's dream to play in the NFL and that's something I've been preparing myself for. But, I came back for my senior year to enjoy my final year in college. That's a once in a lifetime experience, and I'm enjoying every minute of it, so the NFL hasn't been a distraction at all. I know it will be there when the time comes.
Q: Describe the best play you've ever made?
A: I would have to say my most memorable one right now would have to be the catch and run I made at Baylor earlier this year. I caught the ball close to the sideline, turned and ran through one tackler and stiff-armed another guy for about 10 yards to the end zone. I gave that guy a Rick (UT Heisman Trophy winner and current Miami Dolphin Ricky Williams). I stole that stiff-arm from him. That's probably the most memorable right now because it's the most recent. When I'm old and gray, I'd probably give you a different answer.
Q: What is your favorite thing about Austin?
A: It's a beautiful city with nice people and there's always something to do. It's a fun town and you get to meet a lot of different people. . . . Cincinnati's a great place too. I was up there to shoot a TV commercial for the NCAA and (the Reds') Adam Dunn showed me around this summer. I didn't get to spend enough time there, but it seemed like a great town.
Q: If you could write an end to your college career, how would it go?
A: If we can go to Texas A&M for our final game of the season with a BCS game on the line, that will be perfect. That's how I would like to end it . . . with a big game against our state rival for a spot in a big-time bowl game. That would be perfect, but we have to get ready for Oklahoma State this week for that to happen.
Q: What is your favorite pass route to run?
A: It's not my route, but I'd have to say the wide receiver pass. We've been practicing that for three years, and I finally had a chance to throw one of those this year. I was like 0-for-6 on those in high school and it was great to complete it to B.J. (Johnson for 56 yards). I really like that play because I get to show off my old quarterback skills.
Q: Did you seriously consider entering the NFL draft after last season? Why'd you come back?
A: There were a bunch of reasons. I made a commitment to Coach (Mack) Brown when I came to Texas and I wanted to stay true to my word and finish all four years. I also have a lot of close friends on the team and just really enjoy being in college. We have such a great family atmosphere around here that I couldn't imagine not being around the guys for another year. I also am a competitor and I wanted to be the best receiver in the country. I wanted to work to continue to develop every part of my game. Charles Rogers was the best receiver last year and I wanted to improve myself so that I could be the best this year.
Q: How important is the Biletnikoff award to you?
A: Very important. That signifies that you are the best receiver in the country and that is my goal. That was one of my goals I had for the season, but with the way we've become more of a running team, I may not be able to put up the numbers to even be a finalist. Right now I'm working hard to improve on my downfield blocking so that NFL teams can see that I can be the total package. Maybe that and if I can make some big plays and we keep winning will be enough for me to get some recognition.
