Top 25: Vols crush 'Canes' title hopes

Miami held without TD

The Associated Press

MIAMI - Brock Berlin threw two interceptions and fumbled once, and No. 18 Tennessee stunned sixth-ranked Miami 10-6 Saturday to knock the Hurricanes out of the national championship picture for the first time in four years and end the nation's longest home winning streak at 26 games.

The Volunteers (7-2) became the first visiting team to win at the Orange Bowl since Penn State on Sept. 18, 1999. Tennessee won with just 170 yards of offense, 81 passing and 89 rushing.

"It was probably the prettiest, ugliest win I've ever had," Volunteers coach Phillip Fulmer said.

Tennessee scored its touchdown on fourth-and-goal from the 2 in the second quarter, on an end-around by Derrick Tinsley that gave Tennessee a 10-3 lead.

It was the first time since a 47-0 drubbing at Florida State in 1997 that Miami went without a touchdown. The Hurricanes (7-2) failed to score a touchdown at home for the first time since 1984.

Miami had 12 penalties for 121 yards, including one on Tennessee's TD drive.

No. 1 Oklahoma 77, Texas A&M 0

NORMAN, Okla. - Jason White tied a school record with five touchdown passes as the Sooners (10-0, 6-0 Big 12) exacted brutal revenge against the team that derailed their national title hopes in a 30-26 upset last season.

It was Oklahoma's most lopsided victory since a 77-0 win over Missouri in 1986 and was the worst-ever defeat for A&M (4-6, 2-4).

Oklahoma scored TDs on 10 of its first 11 possessions. Texas A&M had more penalty yards (63) than offensive yards (54) and more punts (12) than first downs (3), and never crossed its own 40.

Clemson 26, No. 3 Florida St. 10

CLEMSON, S.C. - Charlie Whitehurst threw for one touchdown and ran for another as the Tigers (6-4, 4-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) snapped an 11-game losing streak to the Seminoles (8-2, 6-1) and gave Tommy Bowden his first win in five tries over his father, Bobby.

No. 25 Pittsburgh 31, No. 5 Virginia Tech 28

PITTSBURGH - Lousaka Polite's 2-yard touchdown run with 47 seconds remaining rallied the Panthers (7-2, 4-0 Big East). Pitt led 24-14 late in the third quarter, only to fall behind 28-24 as Kevin Jones scored on runs of 80 and 13 yards barely two minutes apart for Tech (7-2, 3-2).

No. 11 Texas 55, No. 21 Oklahoma St. 16

STILLWATER, Okla. - Cedric Benson ran for 180 yards and a TD, and Roy Williams caught six passes for 162 yards and a score to lead the Longhorns (8-2, 5-1 Big 12) to their sixth straight win over the Cowboys (7-3, 3-3).

No. 12 Washington St. 31, UCLA 13

PULLMAN, Wash. - Jonathan Smith ran for three touchdowns to help the Cougars move into first place in the Pac-10. Washington State (8-2, 5-1) broke a three-way tie for first by beating the Bruins (6-4, 4-2); Southern California (4-1) is a half-game behind.

No. 17 Florida 35, Vanderbilt 17

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Ciatrick Fason scored twice, Keiwan Ratliff returned an interception for a score and the Gators (7-3, 5-2 Southeastern Conference) took sole possession of first place in the SEC East. It was the 23rd straight SEC loss for the Commodores (1-9, 0-6).

No. 19 Nebraska 24, Kansas 3

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Judd Davies scored two touchdowns and the Cornhuskers (8-2, 4-2 Big 12) beat the Jayhawks (5-5, 2-4) for the 35th straight time.

No. 20 Mississippi 24, Auburn 20

AUBURN, Ala. - Brandon Jacobs had a 1-yard touchdown run with 2:39 left to put the Rebels ahead, and Ben Obomanu dropped a pass in the end zone on the final drive for the Tigers (6-4, 4-2 SEC). Ole Miss (8-2) is 6-0 in the SEC for the first time since 1962.

Colorado 21, No. 22 Missouri 16

BOULDER, Colo. - Joel Klatt threw two touchdown passes and the Buffaloes (4-6, 2-4 Big 12) ended a three-game losing streak. The Tigers (6-3, 2-3) lost despite outgaining Colorado 447-276.

No. 23 No. Illinois 40, Buffalo 9

AMHERST, N.Y. - Josh Haldi threw three touchdown passes and Michael Turner ran for 163 yards and scored three touchdowns for the Huskies (9-1, 5-1 Mid-American Conference).

No. 24 Minnesota 37, Wisconsin 34

MINNEAPOLIS - Rhys Lloyd kicked a 35-yard field goal as time expired to lift the Gophers (9-2, 5-2 Big Ten) to their first nine-win season since 1905.

Jim Sorgi threw for a career-high 305 yards and four touchdowns for the Badgers (6-4, 3-3).
