Meth labs could be harder to locate

The Associated Press

OWENSBORO - Police have found a new breed of methamphetamine lab in Daviess County, which might make the uphill battle to find the labs even more difficult.

Investigators discovered two meth labs this fall operating without anhydrous ammonia - the ingredient that often leads police to the labs because it smells like cat urine.

Instead of anhydrous, the labs used the less odorous red phosphorous.

The September discovery of the red phosphorous labs was the first in the area in six years, said sheriff's Detective Sgt. Jim Acquisto.

Some of those arrested in connection with another lab found in October had recently traveled to Florida, where they possibly learned the method, Acquisto said.
