Crudup replaces Berlin as 'Canes QB
Kruczek fired as UCF coach
The Associated Press
Derrick Crudup will replace Brock Berlin as Miami's starting quarterback Saturday against Syracuse, after the Hurricanes scored only one touchdown during two consecutive losses.
Crudup spent two seasons behind Ken Dorsey and nine games behind Brock Berlin. Coach Larry Coker said Berlin would still play against the Orangemen.
Berlin has 14 interceptions and three fumbles, and two losses in his last two starts for the 14th-ranked Hurricanes (7-2). Berlin had five turnovers in losses to Virginia Tech and Tennessee.
UCF FIRES COACH: Central Florida coach Mike Kruczek was fired as the team struggled with a sub-par record on the field and problems with player behavior off of it. Assistant Alan Gooch will replace him for the final two games. The Golden Knights (3-7, 2-4 MAC) are assured of their first losing season since 1999.
Kruczek posted a 36-30 record in five-plus years.
KENTUCKY: Overconfidence should not be a problem Saturday when the Wildcats visit Vanderbilt. Coach Rich Brooks said the Commodores (1-9, 0-6 SEC) look "impressive" on film and noted they lead the overall series (by a 36-35-4 margin). More than half of the games in the series have been close: 31 of the 75 games have been decided by seven points or less. UK is 4-5, 1-4 SEC.
MIAMI REDHAWKS: Freshman Ryne Robinson, who ranks third nationally in punt returns (16.7 yards per return), won MAC East Division Special Teams Player of the Week for the third time. Sophomore linebacker Terna Nande was named Defensive Player of the Week.
CLARETT UPDATE: Maurice Clarett asked the new judge in his misdemeanor case to throw out the charge he lied on a Columbus police report, saying there's no independent evidence the suspended Ohio State tailback inflated the value of stolen items.
