Saint Louis becomes 14th member of A-10
College basketball notes
The Associated Press
Saint Louis, misplaced in a revamped Conference USA, agreed to join the Atlantic 10 for the 2005-06 season. The move comes a week after the Big East took five of Conference USA's best men's programs. The league responded by adding five schools that have football. Saint Louis does not field a football team.
Saint Louis' announcement came a day after another C-USA program, Charlotte, joined the A-10. The Billikens became the 14th team in the A-10, which will not be renamed to reflect the number of programs or where they're located.
WOMEN'S POLL: The player of the year returned and so did everyone else from the national championship team. So, who else but Connecticut would be No. 1 in women's basketball?
UConn was a unanimous choice for the top spot in the Associated Press preseason poll, which was no surprise considering that superstar Diana Taurasi is back for her senior year with a talented cast around her. The Huskies have won the last two NCAA titles and three of the last four. They've started at No. 1 five times.
Ohio State, with former Mason High star and Tennessee transfer Michelle Munoz in the lineup this season, was picked 16th.
