BELLBROOK, Ohio - Donald E. Haury, one of five people shot by a gunman who stormed into a trucking company in West Chester Township last week, is remembered for his loving heart - and his masterful culinary creations.
Mr. Haury loved cooking gourmet meals for his in-laws so much, he even made the pork dinner for his own 50th birthday celebration at his home outside Dayton this past July 10, said his sister-in-law Pamela Short.
"Nothing was plain; everything was extravagant," she said.
Mr. Haury's father-in-law, Jay Fisher, wrote: "He became a self-made gourmet chef by studying cookbooks and cooking shows. ... It excited him to hear the reaction from all."
He also demonstrated special affection for relatives during the holidays, Mr. Fisher said.
"Don loved finding the perfect gift for Christmas and birthdays," he said. "Wrapping each present, he paid close attention to every detail, using a tremendous amount of tape; Don watched everyone work to get their present opened."
Mr. Haury had been a truck driver for 11 years, including nine at Watkins Motor Lines Inc.
A native of New Jersey, Mr. Haury served in the Air Force from 1972-1979, then moved to Ohio.
Survivors include his wife, Vicki; a brother, William, in Florida, along with two aunts; and numerous in-laws.
Friends may call at Cross View Christian Church, 4237 Social Row Road, outside Waynesville, from 2-4 p.m. Friday. Services will follow.
