COLUMBUS - Three college juniors who were pulled from a rooming house fire near the Ohio State University campus that killed five others were present when their rescuers received the Fire Division's highest honor.
Lt. Michael Burnheimer and firefighters Scott Kulpa and Brian Morstadt received the Medal of Valor Thursday night for running into the second floor of the fully engulfed house - without a hose - to save the three.
The students were Jennifer Lehren and Jillian Gardner, who attend Ohio University, and Joshua Patterson, an OSU student.
Morstadt said it all happened too quickly for the firefighters to worry about their own safety.
Three other Ohio University students who were visiting and two Ohio State students who lived in the house died in the April 13 fire, which has been declared an arson.
No one has been charged.
