Top 25 previews

Baylor (3-7) at No. 1 Oklahoma (10-0)

Time: 2:30 p.m.

Line: Oklahoma by 52.

Points: Oklahoma is 12-0 against Baylor but has never shut out the Bears. Is that about to change?

No. 2 Southern Cal (8-1) at Arizona (2-8)

Time/TV: 7 p.m./TBS.

Line: USC by 28 1/2.

Points: USC coach Pete Carroll hopes the Wildcats' upset of Washington got his team's attention. Trojans QB Matt Leinart and his TB triumvirate of Reggie Bush, LenDale White and Hershel Dennis should generate plenty of yards. CB Michael Jolivette is the Wildcats' best hope to slow WR Mike Williams. RB Mike Bell has emerged as the Wildcats' top offensive weapon, but the nation's No. 3 rushing defense will make his day difficult.

No. 3 LSU (8-1) at Alabama (4-6)

Time/TV: 7:45 p.m./ESPN.

Line: LSU by 7.

Points: The Crimson Tide, who provided Oklahoma's biggest scare, hope to derail another national title contender. The Tigers seek to avenge last year's 31-0 drubbing in which Alabama TB Shaud Williams ran for 131 yards. Williams must produce again as he takes on the Southeastern Conference's top rushing defense, anchored by LB Lionel Turner and DT Chad Lavalais. G Justin Smiley and the Tide's banged-up line must protect QB Brodie Croyle (shoulder). Since the Florida loss, LSU QB Matt Mauck and WR Michael Clayton have been on fire.

No. 5 Michigan (8-2) at Northwestern (5-5)

Time/TV: 3:30 p.m./ESPN.

Line: Michigan by 17 1/2.

Points: Needing to win one of its last two for bowl eligibility, Northwestern hopes to catch Michigan looking ahead to Ohio State. Michigan will look to take charge early with RB Chris Perry. Wildcats LB Pat Durr and DE Loren Howard must contain Perry while keeping heat on QB John Navarre. Northwestern RB Jason Wright is playing with a sore ankle. Noah Herron is providing help, but rushing yards will be hard to find against LB Lawrence Reid. Michigan DE Larry Stevens will go after QB Brett Basanez, who could be without WR Roger Jordan (bruised chest).

Texas Tech (7-3) at No. 6 Texas (8-2)

Time: 7 p.m.

Line: Texas by 16 1/2.

Points: Two of the nation's highest-scoring teams battle for bowl position. Red Raiders QB B.J. Symons leads Division I-A in total offense, spreading the wealth among WRs Carlos Francis, Wes Welker and Nehemiah Glover. Texas CB Nathan Vasher also will have an eye on Symons' passes while LB Derrick Johnson keeps tabs on Tech RB Taurean Henderson. Expect Texas to borrow a page from Missouri and let QB Vince Young and RB Cedric Benson do most of the damage against Tech. Raiders SS Ryan Aycock must lend run support without losing track of Texas WR Roy Williams.

Auburn (6-4) at No. 7 Georgia (7-2)

Time/TV: 3:30 p.m./Ch. 12, 7.

Line: Georgia by 6 1/2.

Points: Auburn has left Sanford Stadium victorious in 11 of its last 13 visits. Bulldogs QB David Greene will try to reverse that trend. He'll require better protection as he looks for WR Fred Gibson, who needs a breakout performance. LB-FS Thomas David and FS Sean Jones are the top hitters for a Georgia defense that leads the SEC. They'll concentrate on Auburn TB Carnell Williams. Many eyes will be on Tigers WR Ben Obomanu, trying to bounce back from his end-zone drop against Ole Miss.

Arizona State (4-6) at No. 8 Washington State (8-2)

Time: 3:30 p.m.

Line: Washington State by 13.

Points: The Cougars play their home finale trying to maintain a share of the Pacific-10 lead. The status of QB Matt Kegel (shoulder) might be a game-time decision. Freshman Josh Swogger was shaky in relief against UCLA, so RB Jonathan Smith must repeat his solid rushing performance. WSU WRs Devard Darling and Scott Lunde should find openings against a pass defense that's 90th in the nation. ASU QB Andrew Walter has a bad ankle and might not have his best ground threat, Loren Wade (concussion). The Cougars have 21 interceptions, including six each by Jason David and Erik Coleman.

Mississippi State (2-7) at No. 9 Tennessee (7-2)

Time: 12:30 p.m.

Line: Tennessee by 23 1/2.

Points: The Vols' remaining schedule looks harmless, but they must maintain focus.

No. 12 Virginia Tech (7-2) at Temple (1-8)

Time: 1 p.m.

Line: Virginia Tech by 26.

Points: RB Kevin Jones' breakout game didn't save the Hokies at Pittsburgh. Tech should have an easier time with the Owls.

North Carolina State (7-3) at No. 13 Florida State (8-2)

Time: 3:30 p.m.

Line: FSU by 13 1/2.

Points: Florida State left the door open for the Wolfpack to share the Atlantic Coast Conference title and usurp the league's BCS berth. To beat the Seminoles for a third consecutive time, the Wolfpack must bother QB Chris Rix. LBs Andre Maddox and Pat Thomas will lead that effort. If Rix has time to deliver, WRs Craphonso Thorpe and P.K. Sam should get plenty of opportunities. The Wolfpack also have quick-strike capability with QB Philip Rivers and WR Jerricho Cotchery. But RB T.A. McLendon gives the N.C. State offense a different dimension when he is healthy, which he should be after a bye.

Syracuse (5-3) at No. 14 Miami (7-2)

Time: Noon.

Line: Miami by 19.

Points: Two-game losing streaks are rare at Miami. New starting QB Derrick Crudup will try to stop it. TE Kellen Winslow won't start because of unsportsmanlike conduct penalties.

No. 15 Florida (7-3) at South Carolina (5-5)

Time/TV: 12:30 p.m./Ch. 25.

Line: Florida by 7.

Points: The Gators close their SEC slate hoping to finish high enough in the BCS standings to play for the championship. Gamecocks RB Demetris Summers (concussion) can't play.

No. 16 Pittsburgh (7-2) at West Virginia (5-4)

Time/TV: 7 p.m./ESPN2.

Line: Pittsburgh by 1.

Points: The "Backyard Brawl" is this week's showcase in the Big East, with the Panthers looking to keep the league lead. The Mountaineers must win and hope the Panthers defeat Miami to claim the conference crown. West Virginia CB Adam Jones probably will have help in his coverage of Pittsburgh star WR Larry Fitzgerald. Panthers QB Rod Rutherford is making better use of alternative targets TE Kris Wilson and WR Princell Brockenbrough. West Virginia QB Rasheed Marshall (concussion) missed the Boston College win but should be back. RB Quincy Wilson (bruised lung) also will try to go against a Pittsburgh defense that had trouble with Virginia Tech's Kevin Jones.

Kansas State (8-3) at No. 18 Nebraska (8-2)

Time: 3:30 p.m.

Line: Kansas State by 2 1/2.

Points: This battle for first place in the North headlines Big 12 action. K-State is on a four-game winning streak during which QB Ell Roberson hasn't been intercepted. Nebraska leads the nation in turnover margin, thanks to S Josh Bullocks swiping passes and LB Barrett Ruud forcing fumbles. Cory Ross, off a strong outing vs. Kansas, earned the start at I-back for Nebraska. He and QB Jammal Lord must steer clear of Wildcats LB Josh Buhl. Lord must watch his passing accuracy around K-State DB James McGill.

No. 19 Minnesota (9-2) at No. 20 Iowa (7-3)

Time/TV: Noon/ESPN.

Line: Iowa by 5 1/2.

Points: The Gophers need to crank up their potent running game, led by TBs Marion Barber III and Laurence Maroney. Attempting to stifle them will be Hawkeyes LB Chad Greenway and S Bob Sanders. If Minnesota QB Asad Abdul-Khaliq plays with a sore non-throwing shoulder, he might want to limit his roaming to avoid punishment. TE Ben Utecht (abdominal muscle) is out. Iowa RB Fred Russell will take on LB Ben West and S Eli Ward. With WR Maurice Brown back at full speed, QB Nathan Chandler could make Russell's job easier.

No. 21 Northern Illinois (9-1) at Toledo (6-3)

Time/TV: 3 p.m./FSN.

Line: Northern Illinois by 2 1/2.

Points: Huskies must beat Toledo and hope the Rockets help them out against Bowling Green. Toledo, also with Mid-American Conference West aspirations, won't be persuaded to cooperate.

No. 21 Michigan State (7-3) at Wisconsin (6-4)

Time/TV: Noon/ESPN2.

Line: Wisconsin by 2.

Points: Wisconsin hopes to end its three-game skid but still might be without RB Anthony Davis (ankle). QB Jim Sorgi can remove pressure from WR Lee Evans by spreading the ball to Brandon Williams and Owen Daniels, but Spartans DT Matthias Askew and DE Clifford Dukes will tee off on Sorgi if there is no ground support. Spartans QB Jeff Smoker will look to exploit the Badgers' coverage and keep S Jim Leonhard busy.

Texas El-Paso (2-8) at No. 24 Boise State (8-1)

Time: 3:05 p.m.

Line: Boise State by 40 1/2.

Points: The Broncos gear up for a Western Athletic Conference closing stretch at Fresno State and Hawaii.

Rest of the Top 25

No. 23 Miami U. beat Marshall 45-6 Wednesday. No. 17 Mississippi is idle.
