Simple things, such as coats, shoes, eyeglasses and hearing aids, can make a huge difference to needy children who wouldn't have them without the Neediest Kids of All campaign.
Nonprofit NKOA has been a quiet, giving force in this community since 1952. Last year, it distributed $656,547 to help children in 17 area counties of Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana.
The fund-raising campaign starts this week, but testimonials come in year-round. A student writes: "Thank you so much for my coat, boots and sweater. They are a blessing." A teacher tells the big difference a pair of glasses makes for her student.
Special NKOA accounts are established at 655 schools and Head Start sites and 37 camps. Teachers, counselors, nurses and others use the money for basic needs a student's family cannot afford and no other agency supplies. NKOA may re-clothe a child after a family house fire or pay his way to camp or to field trips. These ordinary things can help a needy kid "fit in" and lift his self-esteem. "Thank you for being there for kids," says a grateful teacher.
The Enquirer and Clear Channel TV and radio stations sponsor NKOA.
You can give to NKOA as an individual, group or business. Some designate gifts in honor or memory of someone; others give through their estates. For more information, call 513-768-8549 or visit the Web (www.cincinnati.com/nkoa) .
