Cult favorites, hit shows compiled for convenience

TV on DVD

By Gil Kaufman
Enquirer contributor

The season offers a wide historical span of television history, from classic sitcoms to such current hits as Sex and the City and The West Wing.

Fans of Ralph Cramden and the gang can get their fill with the 17-hour, five-CD The Honeymooners - 'Classic 39' Episodes ($49.99), with all the original episodes, as well as a TV special hosted by star Audrey Meadows.

A nine-volume I Love Lucy: The Complete First Season ($119.99) is also in the offing, as is the perfect gift for the TV buff on your list, the Sid Caesar Collection: Buried Treasures ($49.90), a three-disc set that features digitally restored sketches from the classic sketch comedy series Your Show of Shows and Caesar's Hour, alongside interviews with Mel Brooks, Woody Allen, Carl Reiner and Neil Simon. (Set is available only on www.sidcaesar.com.)

For the modern TV junkie on your list, the seven-disc Star Trek Deep Space Nine - The Complete Sixth Season ($129.99) is packed with crew dossiers and new, never-before-seen featurettes. Or investigate CSI: Crime Scene Investigation - The Complete Second Season ($89.99), a six-disc set with 19 hours of material, including tours of the trace and ballistics labs and the autopsy room.

Relive the intrigue of Jed Bartlet's first year in the White House with The West Wing - The Complete First Season (Tuesday, $59.98), a four-disc compilation that includes commentary from series creator Aaron Sorkin and deleted scenes from the first 22 episodes.

Obsessive fans (are there any other kind?) of the late, lamented Dawson's Creek can remember the good old days with the four-disc, 22-episode Dawson's Creek: The Complete Second Season (Dec. 16, $49.95). Among the special features are audio commentary from creator Kevin Williamson and an interactive map of Capeside.

And, if the kids haven't already slipped a reminder under your pillow, look for one about Spongebob Squarepants: The Complete First Season ($49.99), a three-disc compilation with a karaoke feature, interactive tour of Bikini Bottom and three music videos.

While you're at it, Spongebob Squarepants Christmas ($19.99) compiles the show's holiday-themed episodes, Blue's Clues: Blue's First Holiday ($19.99), Nicktoons: Christmas - Tales of Good Tidings ($19.99), and the Rugrats Go Wild (Dec. 16, $29.99), which features an exclusive interactive computer game.

Other series making it to DVD include South Park: The Complete Third Season (Dec. 16, $49.99), a three-disc collection featuring 17 episodes of the outrageous cartoon series, and James Clavell's 1970s miniseries about an English ship pilot shipwrecked in 17th century Japan, Shogun ($79.99), a five-disc box with a number of new documentary and historical features.

Just months after his death, John Ritter can be seen on Three's Company - Season 1 ($19.98), a single disc that compiles the first season's six episodes and the series' pilot.

Other multi-disc sets include:

• Married with Children - The First Season ($29.95)

• The King of Queens: The First Season (Tuesday, $39.95)

• The Sopranos - The Complete Fourth Season ($99.98)

• Friends - The Complete Fifth Season ($44.98)

• Alias - The Complete Second Season (Dec. 2, $69.99)

• And what promises to be the first and last set of its kind: My Big Fat Greek Life -- The Entire Series, (Tuesday, $24.95).

Also be on the lookout for boxes commemorating Buffy The Vampire Slayer - The Complete Fifth Season (Dec. 9, $59.98), Sex and the City - The Complete Fifth Season (Dec. 30, $49.99) and Larry David's hilarious HBO series Curb Your Enthusiasm - The Complete First Season (Jan. 13, $39.98).
