Fall kills UC student at Red River Gorge

Compiled from staff and wire reports

SLADE, Ky. - A University of Cincinnati student died Saturday after falling from a 150-foot ledge during a hiking trip, Kentucky State Police said.

Jamison L. Rowland, 18, of Springboro, was camping overnight on the ledge near the Red River Gorge in Menifee County with a group of college students. His companions were awakened by a noise at 3 a.m. and found he had fallen, police said.

Rowland was pronounced dead about 9:30 a.m. by a Menifee County coroner. He is listed in the UC student directory, but the university had no other information Sunday.

State police were investigating the death as an accident.

Harrison man fatally shot at gas station lot

NORTHSIDE - A 50-year-old Harrison man was shot and killed early Sunday in a gas station parking lot.

William Sheidt was shot about 2:21 a.m. after an altercation at the BP Station at 2100 Montana Ave., Cincinnati Police said.

A witness drove Sheidt to the Speedway gas station at Montana Avenue and West Fork Road. Sheidt was taken to University Hospital where he died.

Police described the suspect as black, in his mid-20s, about 5 feet 9 inches tall and 175 pounds. He was wearing dark pants, a black hooded sweatshirt under a dark jacket with a gray stripe from the underarm to the waist. Sheidt is the 59th person slain in Cincinnati this year.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call police at 352-3542 or Crime Stoppers at 352-3040.

Man being evaluated after police standoff

SHARONVILLE - A 45-year-old man was undergoing psychiatric evaluation Sunday after a standoff with police Saturday night.

Gregory Kindler, of Sharonville, was charged with aggravated menacing, inducing panic and using a weapon while intoxicated after he surrendered to police late Saturday night. Sharonville police were called to Kindler's home on Sharon Woods Court about 9:45 p.m. because he reportedly was threatening to commit suicide by a drug overdose.

When police arrived they found Kindler with several guns and decided to retreat, police said. A short time later, several shots were heard from the home and some shots were fired outside.

The Hamilton County SWAT team was able to get Kindler to come out of the house, police said. He was arrested and taken to University Hospital.

Episcopalians elect bishop of Ohio diocese

CLEVELAND - A Massachusetts church administrator who advocates diversity has been elected as the 11th bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Ohio.

The Venerable Mark Hollingsworth Jr., archdeacon of the Diocese of Massachusetts since 1995, won election on the third ballot Saturday to replace retiring Bishop J. Clark Grew II

Hollingsworth won a majority of votes from the 269 lay delegates on the first ballot, but it took until the third ballot to win a majority of the 128 clergy delegates.

The clergy split their first two votes largely between Hollingsworth and the Very Rev. James B. Lemler, president of Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in Evanston, Ill. The Rev. Patricia L. Merchant, rector of Indian Hill Episcopal Presbyterian Church in Cincinnati, finished third.

Jury finds Indiana strip club owner guilty

PRINCETON, Ind. - A Gibson County jury has found a strip club owner guilty of promoting public indecency, a verdict one of his attorneys predicted could affect other clubs across the state.

The jury of five men and one woman deliberated for an hour and 40 minutes before finding Darrell Russelburg, 46, guilty Friday of the misdemeanor charge.

Russelburg, who owns the Old Hickory BBQ in Fort Branch faces a maximum penalty of one year in jail and a $5,000 fine when he is sentenced Thursday.

During the trial, Gibson County Prosecutor Robert Krieg held up a photo of exotic dancers at Russelburg's club and asked jurors to use common sense about whether they were indecent.

Robin Craig, an attorney for Russelburg, said his dancers met requirements of decency spelled out in Indiana law.

Craig said Russelburg's verdict could affect other Indiana businesses where partially nude dancing takes place.
