COLUMBUS - Jeff Renne's plea deal on a forgery charge came with one demand: He had to stay in the local jail through the weekend so he could watch the Ohio State-Michigan game on television on Saturday.
Renne, a Buckeyes fan, knows from his criminal past that there is no television at the reception center where inmates go before they are moved to one of the state's prisons. But inmates at the Franklin County jail get to watch TV.
"I told my attorney if they would table my transfer for a week, I would take the deal," said Renne, who was charged with forgery.
Judge Richard Sheward of Franklin County Common Pleas Court agreed to the deal and accepted Renne's plea on Monday.
USC: Coach Pete Carroll has no complaint about his team's BCS ranking, although he would prefer a different system to determine college football's national champion.
The Trojans are third in the rankings, dropping one spot behind Ohio State despite beating Arizona 45-0 last weekend.
"This is the system that we live with. It is what it is. We know all the conversations will come, but we also realize it doesn't have anything to do with what we are doing on the football field."
WASHINGTON: The university announced disciplinary action Tuesday against 12 athletic department employees, including football coach Keith Gilbertson and compliance officer Dana Richardson, for participation in gambling pools on college basketball.
Richardson received a letter of reprimand. Gilbertson was given a letter of admonishment.
NOTRE DAME: The NCAA notified the school on Tuesday that the Irish (4-6) would be eligible at 6-6 if there aren't enough Big East teams with seven or more wins to fill the league's five bowl berths.
SOUTH CAROLINA: The school extended football coach Lou Holtz's contract Tuesday by one year through 2008. The deal is worth about $800,000 a season.
