NCAA to reward academic excellence

The Enquirer and wire reports

The NCAA next April is expected to approve groundbreaking academic legislation that will reward academic success in an athletic department and punish academic deficiency.

Punishments are expected to include the loss of some NCAA-distributed revenue; the NCAA sees this as a cornerstone in reform but others say this could increase the level of cheating on high school transcripts because the reliance on GPA will be increased.

In conjunction, there is a plan to create a new formula for measuring academic success that incorporates a newly constitution graduate rate.

UC BASEBALL: The Bearcats signed Anderson High senior right-handed pitcher Sean Munninghoff, who is the son of former Philadelphia Phillies 1977 first-round draft choice (22nd Overall) Scott Munninghoff.

Sean joins a 2004 signing class that includes Jake Geglien (McNicholas), Mike Rosa (Sycamore), Evan Sanford and Kevin Schrader.

Hockey

NHL GAMES TUESDAY: Teemu Selanne scored with 1:49 left in overtime, lifting the Colorado Avalanche to a 2-1 victory over the Anaheim Mighty Ducks.

"It's a great feeling to score against your old team," said Selanne, who played parts of six seasons (1996-01) with Anaheim.

"There is still a special feeling. A lot of my friends are still there. So it's not really revenge. There are a lot of things to think about when you play against your ex-team. You get too emotional. I tried to think about it as a normal game."

• Flyers 2, 'Canes 2: Jeff O'Neill and Nic Wallin scored in the final 10 minutes of regulation, and Carolina ended the Philadelphia's six-game winning streak.

Carolina's Kevin Weekes, who had 41 saves, stopped Eric Desjardins on a breakaway with 1:44 left in OT.

Simon Gagne and Sami Kapanen gave the Flyers a two-goal lead.

MIAMI REDHAWKS: Forward Matt Christie, 18, is the nation's leading freshman goal scorer this season with nine. MU's freshman record is 32 by Bill Bok during the school's inaugural season of varsity hockey in 1978-79.

Fourth-place Miami (6-6-2, 4-3-1 CCHA) hosts the sixth-place Alaska-Fairbanks Nanooks (5-5-0, 4-2-0 CCHA) Friday and Saturday at 7:35 p.m. in Goggin Arena.

Horse racing

CHURCHILL DOWNS: Northern Kentuckian Tony D'Amico will ride two-time Spinster Stakes winner Take Charge Lady, owned by Cincinnatians Feye and Jerry Bach, in her final start - in the $300,000 Grade III Falls City Handicap on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 27.

Harness racing

BREEDERS CROWN: No Pan Intended, winner of the Pacing Triple Crown, headlines the 131 horses entered for the Breeders Crown eliminations this weekend at the Meadowlands. The eliminations for 2-year-olds will be raced Friday night and 3-year-olds Saturday night to determine the fields for the eight finals, worth a combined $4.2 million, Nov. 29.

Tennis

FED CUP SEMIFINALS: U.S. captain Billie Jean King doesn't want her team featuring Martina Navratilova, 47, to get too confident for its semifinal against Belgium, which is without the world's top two players. Play in the best-of-5 series begins today, with host Russia facing France in the other semis.

Golf

CHAMPIONS Q-SCHOOL: Australia's Terry Gale shot a 6-under 66 in windy conditions to take the first-round lead in the Champions Tour qualifying tournament in Coral Springs, Fla.

Former Cincinnati Met Amateur champion Tom Elfers shot a 79.

Soccer

MLS SIGNS ADU: Spurning overtures from some of the world's greatest clubs, American phenom Freddy Adu, 14, signed a six-year deal with MLS. He will join D.C. United next season.
