CHICAGO - Fourteen-year-old Freddy Adu was chosen Wednesday to replace injured San Jose Earthquakes player Arturo Alvarez on the U.S. Under-20 men's national team when it competes in the FIFA World Youth Championship.
Coach Thomas Rongen said the team was disappointed to lose Alvarez, but it was clear he would not be fully recovered from a groin injury in time for the tournament Nov. 27-Dec. 19 in the United Arab Emirates.
Adu, who is from Maryland, said earlier Wednesday he had signed a contract with Major League Soccer and will be eligible for the 2004 draft.
He has been playing with the U.S. Under-17 team and led it in scoring this season with 19 goals. He was second last season with 22.
