Adu added to under-20 national soccer team

CHICAGO - Fourteen-year-old Freddy Adu was chosen Wednesday to replace injured San Jose Earthquakes player Arturo Alvarez on the U.S. Under-20 men's national team when it competes in the FIFA World Youth Championship.

Coach Thomas Rongen said the team was disappointed to lose Alvarez, but it was clear he would not be fully recovered from a groin injury in time for the tournament Nov. 27-Dec. 19 in the United Arab Emirates.

Adu, who is from Maryland, said earlier Wednesday he had signed a contract with Major League Soccer and will be eligible for the 2004 draft.

He has been playing with the U.S. Under-17 team and led it in scoring this season with 19 goals. He was second last season with 22.

Tennis

FED CUP: Meghann Shaughnessy edged Kirsten Flipkens 9-7 in the third set, and Lisa Raymond overpowered Els Callens, giving the United States a 2-0 lead over Belgium in the Fed Cup semifinals.

Boxing

NIELSEN: Retired boxer Brian Nielsen will be jailed until Nov. 28, while police investigate him for a brawl with officers last weekend.

Nielsen, who won a silver medal at the 1992 Olympics and lost to Mike Tyson in 2001, was jailed on preliminary charges of violence against a police officer.

Auto racing

IRL: Dario Franchitti, who missed all but three IRL races this year because of a back injury, will return to Andretti Green Racing in 2004.

Hockey

Red Wings 5, Blue Jackets 1 - Brett Hull scored two goals and Detroit extending its unbeaten streak to five games.

Kris Draper, Tomas Holmstrom and Steve Thomas also scored for Detroit.

• Detroit placed Darren McCarty on injured reserve Wednesday and recalled Mark Mowers from the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Wild 6, Penguins 2 - Antti Laaksonen scored twice in a three-goal Minnesota first period against rookie goalie Marc-Andre Fleury.

Islanders 4, Panthers 1 - Rookie Trent Hunter scored twice in New York's win.

Devils 4, Sabres 1 - Scott Stevens set up the first two goals and suddenly potent New Jersey extended its unbeaten streak to 10 games.

Scott Gomez, Jay Pandolfo, Brian Gionta and John Madden scored for the Devils.

BLUE JACKETS: Columbus recalled defenseman Anders Eriksson on Monday from Syracuse of the American Hockey League.

CYCLONES: Cincinnati beat Dayton, 2-1 in overtime Wednesday. The win evens the team's record at 7-7.

Terry Marchant scored a powerplay goal and Ryan Brindley scored the game winner.

CINCINNATI DUCKS: Brian Swanson scored a power-play goal at 19:06 of the second period and Kari Lehtonen stopped 31 shots, leading the Chicago Wolves to a 2-1 win over the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks.

DOPING: Slovenian skier Primoz Skerbinek tested positive for the anabolic steroid Stanozolol and was banned for two-years.

Four other athletes picked up two-year bans after testing positive for marijuana: Spanish freestyle skier Peter Alexander Bouvrie Morales; Spanish cross-country skier Ilazki Barace Baque; Italian snowboarder Paolo Bazzano, and Italian snowboarder Lorenzo Barbieri.
