Top 25 previews

No. 1 Oklahoma (11-0) at Texas Tech (7-4)

Time: 3:30 p.m.

Line: Oklahoma by 19.

Points: In theory, a clash of the nation's highest-scoring teams should mean plenty of points. But the difference provided by the Sooners' defense could make this a mismatch. Red Raiders QB B.J. Symons needs only 83 yards passing to break Ty Detmer's Division I-A single-season passing yardage record of 5,188. Texas Tech defense must generate takeaways, which Oklahoma QB Jason White doesn't usually allow.

UCLA (6-5) at No. 2 Southern Cal (9-1)

Time: 3:30 p.m.

Line: USC by 22.

Points: There is never a good time for a three-game skid, but the Bruins' slide is particularly ill-timed. USC tries to keep the Victory Bell for a fifth consecutive year and stay in the national title chase. Whether Drew Olson or Matt Moore starts at QB, UCLA isn't likely to mount an aerial threat if the protection doesn't improve. USC's current four-game series winning streak snapped an eight-game Bruins run.

No. 3 LSU (9-1) at No. 15 Mississippi (8-2)

Time/TV: 3:30 p.m./Ch. 12, 7.

Line: LSU by 6 1/2.

Points: Both teams will have work to do next week, but the winner probably will play for the Southeastern Conference title in Atlanta. QB Eli Manning gets most of the publicity for Ole Miss, but the Rebels' success this week will hinge on Jesse Mitchell and the defensive line. They must hold their own against LSU's outstanding group anchored by T Rodney Reed and could regain the services of G Nate Livings (knee). Manning isn't likely to get much ground support against the nation's top rushing defense, especially with second-leading rusher Ronald McClendon withheld while a potential NCAA rules violation is investigated.

No. 8 Washington State (9-2) at Washington (5-6)

Time/TV: 6:30 p.m./FSN (1 a.m., tape).

Line: Washington State by 6 1/2.

Points: With the Huskies in a tailspin, this would seem to be the year the Cougars reclaim the Apple Cup. WSU QB Matt Kegel (knee/shoulder) will start in the rivalry game if he can, but Josh Swogger, strong in relief against Arizona State, will be ready. If RBs Jonathan Smith and Jermaine Green produce on the ground, the Cougars could put up a big score. Huskies QB Cody Pickett needs time to find WR Reggie Williams, but he has lacked a running threat to offset pass pressure. Washington extended its Apple Cup win streak to five last year, 29-26 in triple OT at Pullman.

Vanderbilt (2-9) at No. 11 Tennessee (8-2)

Time: 1 p.m.

Line: Tennessee by 21.

Points: The Vols must win and hope for Georgia to slip.

Boston College (6-5) at No. 12 Virginia Tech (8-2)

Time/TV: 3:30 p.m./ESPN.

Line: Virginia Tech by 15.

Points: The Hokies play their last Big East game, though they'll see the Eagles again in a couple of years when both are in the Atlantic Coast Conference. BC must win to guarantee a bowl slot. The running backs take center stage as BC's Derrick Knight looks to outduel Tech's Kevin Jones. Paul Peterson will make his second start at QB for the Eagles. His mobility could prove useful against Tech DE Nathaniel Adibi, but he must be careful. Bryan Randall and Marcus Vick have 13 INTs between them, a figure Boston College DB Will Blackmon could increase. Boston College last beat Virginia Tech in 1995, 20-14 at Blacksburg.

Rutgers (4-6) at No. 13 Miami (8-2)

Time: Noon.

Line: Miami by 27.

Points: QB Brock Berlin has regained the starting role for the Hurricanes, who hope that all is settled before heading to Pittsburgh.

No. 16 Purdue (8-3) at Indiana (2-9)

Time: Noon.

Line: Purdue by 24 1/2.

Points: The Boilermakers can clinch a share of second in the Big Ten. Capital One and Outback are the most likely bowl destinations.

No. 17 Iowa (8-3) at Wisconsin (7-4)

Time/TV: 3:30 p.m./Ch. 9, 2.

Line: Wisconsin by 2.

Points: Both teams come off convincing victories and look to stay hot heading into bowl season. Iowa's practice week has been disrupted by a flu bug. Among the infected is S Bob Sanders, who had a terrific outing against Minnesota. The Hawkeyes hope he'll be around to help contain Badgers RB Dwayne Smith and WR Lee Evans. Hawkeyes DL Matt Roth will lead the charge against Wisconsin QB Jim Sorgi. Coach Barry Alvarez is going for his 100th victory at Wisconsin. He would be only the 10th Big Ten coach to amass 100 wins at one school.

Missouri (7-3) at No. 18 Kansas State (9-3)

Time/TV: 7 p.m./TBS.

Line: K-State by 14 1/2.

Points: The Wildcats can punch their ticket to Kansas City for the Big 12 title game. The Tigers would need to win their finale against Iowa State but can give themselves the inside track. Two of the game's most exciting QBs, Missouri's Brad Smith and K-State's Ell Roberson, are the headliners. Roberson's offense has more versatility with RB Darren Sproles and WR James Terry capable of breaking loose. K-State owns a 10-game winning streak against the Tigers, but Missouri still holds the longest series run, 16 from 1939-54.

No. 21 Pittsburgh (7-3) at Temple (1-9)

Time: 1 p.m.

Line: Pittsburgh by 15.

Points: The Panthers can't think about Miami yet.

No. 24 Oklahoma State (8-3) at Baylor (3-8)

Time: 12:30 p.m.

Line: Oklahoma State by 27.

Points: The Cowboys seek their best finish since 1988 squad went 10-2.

No. 25 Bowling Green (8-2) at Ball State (4-7)

Time: 1 p.m.

Line: Bowling Green by 14 1/2.

Points: The Falcons' win sets up a showdown with Toledo for the MAC West championship.

Rest of the Top 25

No. 9 TCU played Thursday. No. 7 Texas, No. 10 Florida State, No. 14 Florida, No. 21 Minnesota and No. 23 Nebraska are idle.
