College hoops roundup: Third-ranked Spartans get game-high 21 points from Davis

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Paul Davis scored 21 points and No. 3 Michigan State took advantage of atrocious foul shooting by Bucknell to pull away for a 64-52 victory Friday night.

Playing the most highly ranked team in its history, Bucknell missed an incredible 16 of 17 free throws.

Michigan State trailed 50-49 with just less than seven minutes left but ended the game with a 15-2 run. In the final 8:40, Bucknell missed all eight of its free throw attempts.

Kevin Bettencourt scored 21 points, including five 3-pointers, but was 0-for-3 from the line. Bettencourt made the first basket of the second half - his fourth 3-pointer - to put the Bison ahead for the first time after they trailed by eight in the first half.

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Bill Self won in his Kansas coaching debut after replacing Roy Williams, and the Jayhawks overcame a slow start for the win.

Keith Langford scored 24 points and Wayne Simien had 21 points and eight rebounds for Kansas, coming off consecutive appearances in the Final Four under Williams.

Williams returned home to take over North Carolina and Self moved after three seasons at Illinois. Self had some anxious moments in the early going as Tennessee-Chattanooga took a 24-14 lead.

Zach Morley and Freddie Owen added 12 points apiece for the Badgers, who opened the season without injured forward Alando Tucker.

Jeff Schiffner led Penn with 20 points, including three 3-pointers.

RALEIGH, N.C. - Julius Hodge scored 24 points and had 11 rebounds, leading the Wolfpack in a season opener.

Hodge, a junior who was a first-team all-ACC pick last season, was 9-for-12 from the field. Scooter Sherrill added 14 with four 3-pointers while Marcus Melvin had 11 for North Carolina State.

STILLWATER, Okla. - Tony Allen scored 18 points and Ivan McFarlin added 15 for the Cowboys.

OSU's defense forced 27 turnovers and Janavor Weatherspoon and Joey Graham each had 13 points as the Cowboys won their 29th straight nonconference game at home.
