Women: XU, UC winners

LOUISVILLE - Four Musketeers scored in double figures as the Xavier women's basketball team won its season opener for the fifth year in a row with a 72-64 victory at Louisville Friday night.
Kristy Wallner scored 15 points and recorded her first career double-double with 10 rebounds to lead the Musketeers. Sophomore Tara Boothe (Highlands), the 2003 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, had 15 points and nine rebounds. Freshman Michele Miller (North College Hill) added 15 points as she hit four threes off the bench.
Xavier hit 10 threes in the game on 21 attempts, one year after graduated players Reetta Piipari and Amy Waugh combined to hit 161 of Xavier's 182 threes in 2002-03.
Cincinnati 74, IUPUI 47
Debbie Merrill scored 22 points and grabbed 16 rebounds as the Bearcats (2-1) beat IUPUI (0-1).
Merrill made 9-of-19 shots and helped UC to a 47-25 rebounding edge. Valerie King also had 22 points.
Va. Tech 77, Miami 60
The RedHawks (0-2) shot just 32 percent from the floor in the loss to Virginia Tech. Miami's Colleen Day scored 15 points.
Thomas More 79, Wilmington 75
WILMINGTON - Thomas More opened the Damon's/Wilmington Inn Tip-Off with a 78-75 win over the hosts. Joanna Bess led the Saints with 23 points.
Mt. St. Joseph 67, Earlham 64
Batavia grad and junior forward Katie Swart scored 21 points to lead the Lions (1-0) to a season-opening victory over Earlham (0-1).
No. 16 Ohio St. 83, Ohio 50
COLUMBUS - Caity Matter scored 17 points and No. 16 Ohio State shot 61 percent from the field to beat Ohio in the season opener.
Jessica Davenport and Kim Wilburn added 15 points each for the Buckeyes, who built a 44-20 lead by shooting 15 for 25 in the first half. Ohio State finished 27 for 44 from the floor while holding the Bobcats to 34 percent (17 for 50) shooting.
Michelle Munoz (Mason), a sophomore who sat out last season after transferring from Tennessee, scored eight points in her OSU debut. Latreece Bagley led Ohio with 14 points.
