Plimpton had Bush's number

Norman Mailer, Kurt Vonnegut, Jay McInerney and others swapped George Plimpton stories this week at a memorial service in the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine in New York. Sports Illustrated editor Terry McDonell recalled playing tennis with the writer and former President Bush at Camp David. "The red phone rang," said McDonell. "Everyone thought there was some crisis." The call turned out to be a friend inviting Plimpton to a dinner party.
