FORT THOMAS - Robert Arlyn Scott Sr. lived his life serving others.
For 20 years, he traveled the country - and the world - as a serviceman in the Navy.
When he retired and returned home to Northern Kentucky, he worked as a security guard and later as a police officer.
"He was always helping people. It was like he couldn't do enough to help others," said his wife, Barbara Scott of Fort Thomas.
Mr. Scott died of lung cancer Friday at his Fort Thomas residence. He was 69.
Born in Flemingsburg, Mr. Scott was raised in Verona and graduated from Walton High School before entering the Navy.
During his 20-year tenure in the Navy, he was stationed in California, Maryland, Florida, Iceland and the Mediterranean.
He was ranked aviation boatswain's mate when he was honorably discharged in 1974.
He returned to Northern Kentucky, where he worked as a security manager at Zayre's Department Stores.
In the late 1970s, Mr. Scott became a police officer with the City of Southgate.
After about eight years of service with the city, he went on to serve as a reserve police officer with the City of Dayton.
In 1991, he and his brother, Marion Day Scott, became partners in a grocery store business, Scott's Deluxe Market in Bellevue.
He retired in 1996.
Mr. Scott was active in the Fleet Reserve Association Branch 28 and was a member of the American Legion Post 203.
He enjoyed golfing and woodworking.
In addition to his wife and brother, survivors include two daughters, Kathy D'Alessandro of Georgetown and Karen Lamb of Milford; a son, Robert Arlyn Scott Jr. of Mount Washington; five brothers, George of Independence, Jack of Ocala, Fla., James of Madeira, Kenneth of Verona and William of Leitchfield; a sister, Marilyn Searcy of Verona; and three grandchildren.
Visitation will be 2-6 p.m. today at A.C. Dobbling & Son Funeral Home, 106 S. Fort Thomas Ave., Fort Thomas.
Service will be 10 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of Fort Thomas, 600 N. Fort Thomas Ave., Fort Thomas.
Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Taylor Mill.
