Thomas More men fall in tourney final

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - John Yanniello scored 24 points and had five assists to lead Wilkes past Thomas More 110-94 Saturday in the championship game of the Sprint/Blue Jay Classic.

The Colonels shot 64 percent in the second half and made their final 17 free throws in stretching an 11-point halftime lead into a 16-point final margin of victory.

Yanniello was named tournament Most Valuable Player. Teammate John Sclafani also was named to the all-tournament team after scoring 18 points to go with nine assists and five rebounds against the Saints.

Thomas More junior center Chad Wachs was named to the all-tournament team along with sophomore guard Chris Thompson. Wachs led the Saints with a team-high 17 points, eight rebounds and five assists while Thompson added 11 points after scoring 26 points and the game-winning layup at the buzzer Friday.

Thomas More is 1-1 and will travel down I-275 Wednesday night for the team's annual Thanksgiving eve clash with Division II power Northern Kentucky. Tipoff is set for 7:45 p.m. in Regents Hall.

Christian Brothers 66, NKU 55

Jake Bazeley, Jordan Jeffries and Adam Heitzman combined for 43 points as Christian Brothers (Tenn.) defeated Northern Kentucky in the championship game of the John L. Griffin/Lions Club Classic in Regents Hall.

Bazeley finished with a game-high 16 points.

John Carroll 78, Mt. St. Joe 73

Jerry Angel scored 17 points to lead John Carroll University (2-0) over Mount St. Joseph (1-1), which was led by Paul Volkerding's 24 points.

Women

TMC 64, Frostburg State 52

Senior guard Joanna Bess and freshman guard Brooke Warner led the Saints to victory in the championship game of the Damon's/Wilmington Inn Tip-Off Tournament at Wilmington College. The Saints improved to 2-0. The Bobcats fell to 1-1.

Bess and Warner were named to the all-tournament team. Bess scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds and was named Most Valuable Player.

Warner just missed her first collegiate double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds.

Thomas More plays in-state rival Centre at 3 p.m. Saturday in the second annual Julie Costello Memorial Tournament. Emory and Westminster (Pa.) play in the first game at 1 p.m. Saturday.

South Dakota St. 73, NKU 58

TABERNIER, Fla. - Brenda Davis scored 13 points as defending NCAA Division II national champion South Dakota State defeated NKU in the final of the Holiday Isle Classic.

The top-ranked Jackrabbits placed five players in double figures to defeat NKU in a rematch of last season's national championship game. NKU's Sharell Snardon scored 25 points and 14 rebounds to earn tournament most valuable player honors. NKU, ranked No. 10 nationally, dropped to 1-1.

Maryville 71, Mt. St. Joe 62

Katie Swart led the Lions (1-1) with 16 points, as they fell to Maryville College (2-0).
