International team surges past USA in Presidents

From Ernie Els to Vijay Singh, the International team battered the Americans for a sweep of the six better-ball matches Saturday at George, South Africa, that left the Americans on the verge of losing another cup.
The International team seized a 12 1/2-9 1/2 lead and needs only to win five of the 12 singles matches today to win the Presidents Cup for the second time.
LPGA TOUR: Annika Sorenstam recovered from an eye infection and shot 5-under-par 67 for a 5-under 211 total to take a three-shot lead into the final round of the ADT Championship.
UBS CUP: Arnold Palmer and Curtis Strange beat Tony Jacklin and Nick Faldo 4 and 3 to help the United States remain a point behind The Rest of the World team 6 1/2-5 1/4 entering today's 12 singles matches in St. Simons Island, Ga. The U.S. is seeking its third straight victory in the event that features 12-man teams made up of six players 50 years and older and six between 40-49.
Tennis
FED CUP: Team USA needs three straight wins if it's going to beat France in the final. The Americans fell behind 2-0 in the best-of-5 series after the French won both singles matches.
Colleges
NKU SOCCER: Meghan Pile's goal six minutes into overtime lifted Nebraska-Omaha past Northern Kentucky 1-0 in the NCAA Division II quarterfinals.
The Mavericks (17-3-2) advance to the Final Four for the second straight season after defeating NKU (17-3-4) in the quarterfinals.
NKU VOLLEYBALL: Sabrina Bird finished with 14 kills, four blocks and a .684 hitting percentage as Grand Valley State defeated the Norse 30-20, 30-27, 30-25 in the finals of the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region Tournament at Marquette, Mich.
Grand Valley (29-7) advances to the Elite Eight for the fourth straight year. NKU finished 26-12.
Skiing
WORLD CUP: Bode Miller charged through falling snow to come from behind for his second straight giant slalom victory at Park City, Utah. It was the first victory for an American man at an Alpine World Cup event in the United States since 1984, when Bill Johnson won a downhill at Aspen.
Horse racing
CHURCHILL DOWNS: Riskaverse, ridden by Cornelio Velasquez, collared front-running favorite Bien Nicole in deep stretch to win the Grade III Cardinal Handicap and top the $1 million mark in career earnings.
Local hockey
AHL DUCKS LOSE: Tyler Bouck scored the winning goal 5:31 into the third period to lift the Manitoba Moose to a 2-1 victory over the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks Saturday night at Winnipeg Arena.
Justin Morrison also scored for the Moose, who have won three in a row for the first time this season.
Alex Auld stopped 30 shots for his fifth win. Alexei Smirnov scored for Cincinnati, which has lost three straight games after going 5-1-1-0 in its previous seven. Eddy Ferhi, making his fifth start for the Ducks, stopped 25 shots in the losing effort.
ECHL CLONES WIN: Cincinnati finally beat the Peoria Rivermen, 2-1 Saturday at Peoria, after three consecutive losses to them at U.S. Bank Arena. Garrett Prosofsky and Scott Cameron scored for the Cyclones. Goalie Tyler Masters made 29 saves for his first pro victory.
REDHAWKS SWEEP: Matt Christie, who leads the nation's freshmen in goals, scored in overtime Saturday to lift Miami (8-6-2, 6-3-1 CCHA) to a 5-4 win and two-game weekend sweep of Alaska-Fairbanks (5-7-0, 4-4-3) at Goggin Arena. Senior Derek Edwardson, whose goal sent the game to OT, also had three assists.
