USA rallies; Presidents Cup ends in a draw

The Enquirer and wire reports

After 34 matches and three playoff holes between Tiger Woods and Ernie Els, the Presidents Cup in South Africa was declared a tie.

Captains Jack Nicklaus of the defending champion United States and Gary Player of the International team agreed to share the cup.

LPGA TOUR: Ohio State product Meg Mallon outplayed Annika Sorenstam over the final nine holes and took advantage of a rare miscue by the world's best female player to beat her by one stroke in the season-ending ADT Championship.

UBS CUP: The United States kept the cup after Scott Hoch rallied for a draw against Eduardo Romero at St. Simons Island, Ga.

The Americans tied the Rest of the World 12-12, allowing the U.S. team to retain the title for the event in which six members of each team are 50 years or older and six are 40 to 49.

DUNLOP PHOENIX: Thomas Bjorn shot an even-par 71 to overtake third-round leader Sergio Garcia and win the Dunlop Phoenix tournament in Miyazaki, Japan.

PEBBLE BEACH: John Daly shot a 3-under-par 69 for a one-shot victory at the invitational, his second straight win and first in the United States in nine years.

Soccer

MLS CUP: Landon Donovan scored twice for the San Jose Earthquakes in a 4-2 victory over the Chicago Fire for the Major League Soccer's championship.

The title was the second in three years for San Jose.

Baseball

A-ROD TRADE: American League MVP Alex Rodriguez would accept a trade to either the Boston Red Sox or the New York Yankees, The Dallas Morning News reported Sunday.

Colleges

UC SOCCER: After a scoreless tie, sophomore midfielder Joey Gaworecki scored Kentucky's fourth penalty kick to lift UK (12-6-2) over Cincinnati (10-4-6) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Lexington. UK meets the Indiana Hoosiers (12-3-5) in Bloomington at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Tennis

FED CUP: Despite Martina Navratilova, 47, extending her Fed Cup record to 39-0, the Americans were beaten by France 4-1 in Moscow.

Amelie Mauresmo won the title-clinching match.

Hockey

SUNDAY NHL GAMES: Marc Savard, who redirected Miami University product Randy Robitaille's long wrist shot, scored in his return from a nine-game layoff and led the Atlanta Thrashers to a franchise-record four-game winning streak with a 1-0 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes.

• Rangers 6, Senators 2: Martin Rucinsky had a goal and three assists and Brian Leetch had a goal and an assist for his first multipoint game this season, as the Rangers snapped a four-game winless streak.

• 'Canes 0, Lightning 0: Nikolai Khabibulin stopped 37 shots for his 34th career shutout and 13th with Tampa Bay. Kevin Weekes picked up his third shutout of the season and 16th of his career, stopping 21 shots.

Harness racing

BREEDERS CROWN: No Pan Intended took a step toward adding a Breeders Crown to his championship season with an elimination victory at the Meadowlands.

Elsewhere

SKIING: Bode Miller's bid for three wins in three World Cup races ended when he fell in the first slalom run at Park City, Utah.

BOWLING: Ryan Shafer beat Chris Barnes 217-215 to win the PBA Tour's Empire State Open in Latham, N.Y.

BOXING: Julio Cesar Chavez, 41, stopped Willie Wise in the second round, the first of two fights to conclude the former champion's career.
