Top 25: UNC routs Davidson

The Associated Press

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - All across North Carolina, fans are coming out to see Roy Williams.

The new Tar Heels coach made his first appearance in Charlotte and drew an impressive crowd of Carolina faithful, who turned out en masse to watch No. 9 North Carolina rout Davidson 91-68 on Monday night.

Jawad Williams led North Carolina (2-0) with a career-high 28 points, Sean May had 19 and Rashad McCants added 13.

Raymond Felton added 12 assists for the Tar Heels, who had few problems with Davidson (0-2), which humiliated them two years ago in a 58-54 upset in Chapel Hill.

Not this time. In just two games under Williams, North Carolina has already shown improvement from its fall the past two years as one of the nation's top programs to a mediocre team.

It was evident from the start, to the delight of the crowd of 16,356 at the Charlotte Coliseum. More than two-thirds of the fans were wearing Carolina blue and greeted Williams with a standing ovation when he led the team onto the court.

Brendan Winters led Davidson with 24 points.

No. 11 Texas 122, Sam Houston State 71

AUSTIN, Texas - Sydmill Harris scored 23 points and Brandon Mouton added 20 for the Longhorns.

P.J. Tucker added 18 points and 11 rebounds, his second career double-double in as many games. The Longhorns (2-0) hit 12 3-pointers.

Joe Thompson scored 13 to lead Sam Houston State (1-1), which lost all five starters from last season's Southland Conference championship team.

Texas hit seven 3-pointers in the first half, made 24 field goals to Sam Houston's nine and outrebounded the Bearkats 33-13 in building a 67-29 lead by halftime. Texas' school record for points in a half is 74, set in 1978 against Northern Montana. The record for total points is 148, scored in that game.

No. 21 Notre Dame 74, Northern Illinois 65

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Torin Francis had 24 points, 19 rebounds and five blocked shots and the Irish held off a late charge for the win.

The Huskies (1-1), who trailed by as many as 17 points, made 9-of-13 shots down the stretch to close to 69-63 when Anthony Maestranzi made a 3-pointer with 40 seconds left.

The Irish (1-0) then made 5-of-6 free throws to hold on.

Marcus Smallwood led Northern with 21 points and 18 rebounds.

No. 4 Arizona 107, N. Arizona 73

TUCSON, Ariz. - Channing Frye scored 20 points and Andre Iguodala added 18 to give coach Lute Olson his 500th victory with the Wildcats.

Isaiah Fox, suspended from the two previous exhibition games for stealing a candy bar and bagels from a school store, had his first career double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman point guard Mustafa Shakur had 14 points in his college debut for the Wildcats.

Kodiak Yazzie scored 16 points to lead the Lumberjacks.

Olson, beginning his 21st season at Arizona, is 500-147 with the Wildcats. The 69-year-old coach needs eight victories to reach 700 overall. His record is 692-239 at Long Beach State, Iowa and Arizona.

No. 23 Marquette 70, Northern Michigan 58

MILWAUKEE - Travis Diener scored 15 points and Steve Novak chipped in with 14 for the Golden Eagles (4-0).

Scott Merritt added 12 points and 11 rebounds. The Division II Wildcats (2-1) played a solid game, and were led by Ricky Volcy's 14 points. Marco Volcy added 12.

No. 16 Gonzaga 90, Denver 58

SPOKANE, Wash. - Ronny Turiaf scored 21 points to lead Gonzaga.

Gonzaga (2-1) used a 23-6 run midway through the second half to pull away from the Pioneers. They outscored Denver 45-23 in the second half.

Cory Violette added 16 points for the Bulldogs. Zeljko Zupic and Erik Benzel had 13 points apiece for Denver in its opener.
