Nagging hip injury sidelines Lemieux

Enquirer wire services

PITTSBURGH - Mario Lemieux will be out indefinitely because of an injured left hip that already has sidelined him for more than three weeks.

The Pittsburgh Penguins' star center will miss home games this week against Philadelphia and the New York Rangers, a road game at Carolina on Saturday and, possibly, many more.

This season, the Penguins (5-10-3-1) are 2-6-0-1 without Lemieux.

"Mario continues to rehab and continues the treatment, but unfortunately he's going to be out indefinitely," Penguins coach Eddie Olczyk said Monday.

• Panthers 2, Sabres 1 - Florida defenseman Mathieu Biron became the first NHL player in 23 years to score against his brother, beating Buffalo goalie Martin Biron in Florida's win.

Phil Esposito of the New York Rangers was the last previous player to accomplish the feat, scoring on brother Tony of Chicago on Nov. 5, 1980.

• Capitals 4, Red Wings 1 - Jaromir Jagr, Robert Lang and Dainius Zubrus combined for eight points to give Washington the win.

• Maple Leafs 2, Canucks 1 - Ed Belfour passed Glenn Hall for fifth place on the career victory list, stopping 24 shots in Toronto's win.

Belfour has 408 victories, 15 shy of Tony Esposito for fourth place. Patrick Roy is first with 550.

• Stars 5, Coyotes 2 - Mike Modano, Jason Arnott and Jere Lehtinen scored power-play goals in Dallas' win.

FLYERS: An MRI Monday revealed no structural damage to Jeremy Roenick's back. The injury has been bothering him for more than a week.

AVALANCHE: Center Andrei Nikolishin will be out about three weeks after spraining his knee.

CINCINNATI DUCKS: The Mighty Ducks will play the 500th regular-season game in franchise history Wednesday when they face the Utah Grizzlies at 7:35 p.m. at Cincinnati Gardens.

The entire Ducks team will be available to sign autographs for fans in Legends Museum following Sunday's game against Grand Rapids.

Elsewhere

MIAMI: Junior David Mitchell finished 30th at the NCAA cross country championships Monday, leading the RedHawks to a 14th-place finish. Mitchell earned all-America honors, Miami's first since 1986.

Seniors Brian Godsey (Lakota East) and Steve Padgett (LaSalle) finished 86th and 87th respectively.

Stanford took first place overall at the event.

UC: Anders Cedergren and Tim Brown, two Bearcats soccer players, were named 2003 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans. Cedergren (3.913 GPA) is a senior co-captain, and Brown (3.722) is tied for the team lead in goals with six.

OAC: Otterbein's Diana Esterkamp (McAuley) was named Ohio Athletic Conference player of the week in women's basketball after scoring 37 points, and grabbing 11 rebounds in wins against Adrian (Mich.) and Penn State Behrend.
