Blue Jackets settle for 3-3 deadlock with Oilers

Digest

The Enquirer and wire reports

Brad Isbister and Radek Dvorak scored third-period goals to help the Edmonton Oilers grab a 3-3 tie with the host Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday night.

Manny Malhotra picked up his first goal for Columbus and Geoff Sanderson and Trevor Letowski added scores for the Jackets, 2-0-2-0 in their last four at home.

• Rangers 2, Lightning 0: Jussi Markkanen made 36 saves for his second shutout of the season; Mark Messier (his 685th career goal) and Jed Ortmeyer scored.

• Blues 4, Bruins 3, OT: Doug Weight scored with 41 seconds left in overtime, lifting St. Louis to the win after Keith Tkachuk tied it with :29 left in regulation.

• Senators 6, Thrashers 3: Wade Redden scored two goals and Ottawa rallied from a three-goal deficit.

• Canucks 5, Canadiens 2: Markus Naslund had two goals and an assist, and Todd Bertuzzi also had three points.

SABRES: Forward Tim Connolly, who still has post-concussion symptoms and hasn't played a game this season, is out indefinitely.

ECHL CLONES WIN: Cincinnati defeated the defending Kelly Cup champion Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies 4-2 Tuesday at Boardwalk Hall. Miami University product Ryan Brindley scored the winner on a power play as the Cyclones improved to 9-8-0. Tom Rouleau, Scott Cameron (shorthanded) and Mike Casselman (empty netter) also scored for Cincinnati.

MIAMI REDHAWKS: The NHL Central Scouting Service listed 14 CCHA players - including Miami freshmen Matt Christie and Joe Cooper and Steve Hartley - of 40 U.S. college players on its preliminary ranking for the 2004 NHL entry draft June 25-27 in Raleigh, N.C.

Christie and Cooper were 21st and 31st among the 35 ranked skaters and Hartley, son of Atlanta Thrashers coach Bob Hartley, was No. 4 among five ranked college goaltenders.

Christie, whose 11 goals lead all Division I freshmen and are tied for second overall, was named CCHA Rookie of the Week.

Track and field

HALL OF FAME: Middle-distance great Mary Decker Slaney, sprinter John Carlos, and 400-meter runners Larry James and the late Mike Larrabee will be inducted Dec. 5 into the national shrine.

Decker Slaney was the 1983 world champion at 1,500 and 3,000 meters and set 36 national records from the 800 to the 10,000.

Carlos is best known for joining Tommie Smith in raising black-gloved fists in a black power salute during the medal ceremony for the 200 meters at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. Carlos won the bronze in that event. He also was a world record-holder at 100 yards and 200 meters. James was on the gold-medalist team for the 1,600 relay at those Olympics. He also won a silver in the individual 400.

Larrabee, who died in April at age 69, won gold medals for the 400 and 1,600 relay at the 1964 Olympics.

Harness racing

BREEDERS CROWN: Pacing Triple Crown winner No Pan Intended is the 6-5 favorite in a field of 10 for Saturday's race for 3-year-olds at the Meadowlands. The season ender features eight races for 2- and 3-year-olds with $4.3 million in total purses.

Horse racing

CHURCHILL DOWNS: Hall of Fame trainer Bobby Frankel canceled plans to run Sightseek and Medaglia d'Oro in the Falls City Handicap on Thanksgiving and the Clark Handicap on Friday.

Golf

SKINS GAME: Annika Sorenstam is the first woman in the made-for-TV event (Ch. 9, 2: Saturday, 4:30-7 p.m.; Sunday, 3:30-6 p.m.). Fred Couples, defending champ Mark O'Meara and Phil Mickelson are the other competitors.
