Falcons RB Dunn done for season
The Associated Press
FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. - Warrick Dunn's season ended Tuesday when the Atlanta Falcons placed their leading rusher on injured reserve with a torn ligament in his left foot.
Dunn had to be carried off the field early in the fourth quarter of the Falcons' 38-31 loss to Tennessee on Sunday. Coach Dan Reeves said Monday Dunn initially got hurt during his 162-yard rushing effort in a 23-20 overtime loss at New Orleans the previous week.
T.J. Duckett will replace Dunn as the starter.
Dunn has never been placed on injured reserve in his seven-year career. The team doesn't know whether Dunn will need surgery.
Dunn, in the second season of a six-year, $28.5 million contract he signed after leaving Tampa Bay as a free agent, had 672 yards rushing and 336 yards receiving and scored five touchdowns in 11 games this year.
CHIEFS: The expensive bottle of wine Kansas City coach Dick Vermeil said he would give Morten Andersen for kicking the game-winning field goal against Oakland will have to stay locked in the coach's liquor cabinet.
The NFL office, after hearing of comments by Vermeil and Andersen following Kansas City's 27-24 victory over Oakland on Sunday, called to remind the Chiefs that offering performance bonuses that are not included in contracts is a no-no.
"We'll have to wait until after the season to share a glass of wine at my house," Vermeil said. "I just can hardly believe it."
Assistant general manager Denny Thum, who spoke with league officials on the matter, said there would be no fine or disciplinary action.
LIONS: A woman was charged with lying to police for accusing Detroit wide receiver Scotty Anderson of rape. Prosecutor Mike Duggan said Tuesday Nicole Dolores Milburn was not raped and did not have sex with Anderson.
Milburn was charged with filing a false police report. If convicted, she could face up to four years in jail. Anderson never faced charges in the case.
REDSKINS: Washington signed tackle Kenyatta Jones, who was released a month ago by New England after being charged with assault. Jones started 11 games at right tackle for the Patriots last year, but he has not played this season because of offseason knee surgery. He was cut Oct. 26, five days after he was arrested for allegedly assaulting his roommate with scalding water.
COLTS: Indianapolis coach Tony Dungy has become frustrated with penalties. The Colts drew three personal fouls Sunday at Buffalo - penalties Dungy thought were unnecessary.
He explained one penalty was a bad call. But the other two should have been avoided.
"We can't have those," he said. "Ryan Diem's was a retaliation thing and Nick Harper's was wrestling a guy on the sideline. It's tough to give up 45 yards in that type of game."
MONDAY NIGHT RECAP: Tampa Bay revived its playoff hopes Monday night with a 19-13 victory over the New York Giants.
Brad Johnson threw for 269 yards and one touchdown, helping the Bucs (5-6) stop a three-game losing streak.
Charles Lee scored on a 53-yard reception.
Tampa Bay's defense forced four turnovers by Kerry Collins and sacked the Giants quarterback twice. John Lynch's interception with less than four minutes to go helped ensure the outcome.
